Act 18 — Calypso’s Ascension

Era: Power Unbound (Era 3)
Previous: Act 17 — Cabin Gathering
Next: Pareidolia (Era 4)

Overview

Calypso’s Ascension follows Ellie Parsons, a relatively new Hell Hosts soldier whose solo reconnaissance mission into the Ice Kingdom leads to the awakening of a kingdom that had remained dormant for centuries.

While exploring ancient frozen ruins, Ellie discovers the Chamber of Ogygia, an ancient Elysarian structure hidden within the Ice Kingdom.

She enters the chamber alone.

Unknown to Ellie, the structure is an ancient Ascension Chamber connected to the dormant power of the Ice Kingdom. Rather than simply discovering the chamber, Ellie is chosen by it as the kingdom’s new ruler.

The damaged ancient system transforms her body, mind, and connection to the Ice Kingdom. Her memories become fragmented, her former weapon transforms into Absolute Zero, and Ellie emerges with powerful cryokinetic abilities.

The transformation does not completely erase Ellie Parsons.

Instead, it changes her.

As the chamber awakens, so too does the Ice Kingdom.

The Hell Host Private who entered the ruins does not return.

In her place rises Calypso, the Ice Queen.

Sub-Acts

18.1 — Into the Ice

Ellie Parsons enters the Ice Kingdom during a solo reconnaissance mission for the Hell Hosts.

At the time, Ellie is still a relatively new member of the Doom Corps, holding the rank of Private Second Class.

She is not a famous soldier.

She is not a senior officer.

She is not searching for power.

Ellie’s mission takes her deeper into the frozen region, where enormous stretches of the Ice Kingdom have remained dormant and largely unexplored for centuries.

Ancient ruins remain buried beneath layers of frost and ice.

During the reconnaissance mission, Ellie discovers one of these forgotten sites.

She investigates alone.

Deep within the frozen ruins, she discovers an ancient chamber.

18.2 — Chamber of Ogygia

Ellie enters the structure that would later become known as the Chamber of Ogygia.

The chamber is ancient.

Its construction originates from the Elysarian Dominion, belonging to a class of technology developed thousands of years earlier to control and stabilise Ascension-like transformations.

However, the Chamber of Ogygia has been dormant for an immense period of time.

Its systems are no longer completely intact.

Ellie does not understand the true purpose of the structure when she enters.

No squad accompanies her.

No officer witnesses what happens.

No outside observer records the activation.

The chamber responds to Ellie’s presence.

For centuries, the Ice Kingdom has remained without its ancient royalty.

The Chamber of Ogygia is more than an abandoned machine.

It is a test.

A vessel.

A coronation site.

The chamber activates.

And it chooses Ellie.

18.3 — Ascension

Ellie undergoes an Ascension Event inside the Chamber of Ogygia.

Unlike Blood’s violent transformation within the Ashen Kingdom, Ellie’s Ascension is connected to ancient Elysarian technology designed to stabilise transformational forces.

But the chamber is damaged.

The process is not perfect.

Ancient cryonic energies begin transforming Ellie, altering her body and binding her to the dormant power of the Ice Kingdom.

Her consciousness survives the process, but her memories become fragmented.

Parts of her identity become difficult to reach.

Images, people, places, and moments from her former life become confused as the chamber attempts to preserve Ellie while simultaneously transforming her into something far beyond an ordinary human.

Her physical appearance changes.

The temperature surrounding her falls.

Ice begins responding to her presence.

The power of the Ice Kingdom becomes connected to her.

Her 365 Specialist Assault Rifle is transformed alongside her, becoming the weapon later known as Absolute Zero.

Ellie Parsons is not erased.

But she can no longer return to what she was.

The chamber has chosen its ruler.

18.4 — Ice Queen

The Ascension process ends.

Ellie emerges from the Chamber of Ogygia transformed.

The young Doom Corps soldier who entered the chamber now possesses power tied directly to frost, ice, and the ancient forces of the kingdom surrounding her.

And across the Ice Kingdom, something begins to change.

A region that had remained dormant for centuries begins awakening.

Ancient structures stir.

Frozen anomalies become increasingly active.

Violent storms begin appearing throughout the region.

The kingdom that had waited centuries for royalty has finally found its ruler.

Ellie never sought a throne.

She never intended to become royalty.

She entered the Ice Kingdom as a soldier carrying out a reconnaissance mission.

Now she carries the burden of an entire kingdom.

Despite the transformation, Ellie Parsons remains somewhere beneath the crown.

Her humanity survives.

Her memories survive in fragments.

The person she once was has not disappeared.

But her life as an ordinary Hell Host soldier is over.

Ellie Parsons entered the chamber alone.

Calypso left it crowned.

The Ice Queen has risen.

Characters

Calypso

Real Name: Ellie Parsons
Faction Before Ascension: Hell Hosts
Division Before Ascension: Doom Corps
Rank Before Ascension: Private Second Class
Faction After Ascension: Ice Kingdom
Title After Ascension: Ice Queen / Queen Calypso

Ellie Parsons is the central character of Act 18.

Before the Ascension, she is a relatively inexperienced Hell Host soldier still attempting to find her place within the Doom Corps.

Her discovery of the Chamber of Ogygia completely changes the direction of her life.

Rather than dying during the chamber’s activation, Ellie survives its transformation and becomes connected to the ancient power of the Ice Kingdom.

She emerges as Calypso, the new Ice Queen.

Although her personality and memories are affected by the transformation, Ellie is not completely destroyed.

Her struggle to preserve the person beneath the crown becomes an important part of Calypso’s later life.

Factions

Hell Hosts

Ellie Parsons serves within the Doom Corps at the beginning of the Act.

Her Ascension ultimately ends her normal service with the faction as her responsibilities become tied to the Ice Kingdom.

Ice Kingdom

The Ice Kingdom has remained largely dormant for centuries before Calypso’s Ascension.

The activation of the Chamber of Ogygia and the selection of a new ruler mark the beginning of renewed activity throughout the region.

Calypso becomes the central ruler of the kingdom.

The Elysarian Dominion

Ancient Elysarian technology is responsible for the Ascension Chamber discovered by Ellie.

The existence of the Chamber of Ogygia provides further evidence that the Elysarian Dominion possessed methods of controlling and stabilising Ascension thousands of years before modern civilizations began encountering the phenomenon.

Locations

Ice Kingdom

The entirety of Act 18 takes place within the Ice Kingdom.

The exact world on which Ellie’s reconnaissance mission occurs remains undocumented.

Chamber of Ogygia

An ancient Elysarian Ascension Chamber hidden within frozen ruins somewhere in the Ice Kingdom.

The chamber had remained dormant for centuries before responding to Ellie Parsons.

Its systems were damaged or incomplete by the time of its activation.

Despite this deterioration, the chamber successfully transformed Ellie and selected her as the new ruler of the Ice Kingdom.

Lore Introduced

Chamber of Ogygia

The Chamber of Ogygia is an ancient Elysarian Ascension Chamber hidden within the Ice Kingdom.

Unlike uncontrolled anomalous transformations, Elysarian Ascension Chambers were originally designed to stabilise dangerous transformational energies while preserving the consciousness of the individual undergoing Ascension.

The Chamber of Ogygia had deteriorated significantly by the time Ellie discovered it.

Its damaged condition contributed to the instability of her transformation and the fragmentation of her memories.

The Ice Queen

Calypso becomes the new ruler of the Ice Kingdom following her Ascension.

Her authority is more than political.

The kingdom itself appears connected to her transformation, with dormant forces throughout the region becoming increasingly active after she is crowned.

Elysarian Ascension Technology

Calypso becomes one of the few confirmed individuals in the modern era to successfully survive the activation of an ancient Elysarian Ascension Chamber.

Her transformation provides further evidence that the ancient Elysarian Dominion understood Ascension far more deeply than modern civilizations.

Unknowns

Several details surrounding Calypso’s Ascension remain undocumented or poorly understood.

These include:

  • Why the Chamber of Ogygia considered Ellie worthy
  • How the chamber determined its chosen ruler
  • The exact world on which the chamber is located
  • How long the chamber had been dormant
  • The full purpose of the Chamber of Ogygia
  • How much of the chamber’s original functionality survived
  • Why the Ice Kingdom required a new ruler
  • The exact nature of Calypso’s connection to the Ice Kingdom
  • The full extent of the damage to Ellie’s memories
  • How and when the Hell Hosts discovered what happened to her

Consequences

Calypso’s Ascension permanently changes the Ice Kingdom.

A region that had remained largely dormant for centuries begins displaying increasing activity following the emergence of its new ruler.

Ancient structures, frozen anomalies, violent storms, and other unexplained phenomena become increasingly common throughout the region.

Ellie Parsons’ life also changes completely.

She entered the Ice Kingdom as a Private Second Class within the Doom Corps.

She leaves the Chamber of Ogygia responsible for an entire kingdom.

Her former life within the Hell Hosts gradually becomes distant as the responsibilities of the crown consume more of her attention.

However, Ellie is never completely erased.

Objects from her former life, including her weapons and memories of those she once knew, continue to connect Calypso to the person she was before her Ascension.

Her transformation also represents another major modern Ascension Event, following the transformations of Robert Anderson and Blood.

By the end of the Power Unbound era, Ascension is no longer simply an ancient concept buried within forgotten records.

Multiple individuals have survived transformations that should have been impossible.

And throughout the galaxy, ancient forces once thought dormant are beginning to awaken.
