Umbra is a Hell Host Sergeant Major serving within the Spectre Division, specializing in military policing, fugitive recovery, tracking, and the pursuit of personnel attempting to evade Hell Host authorities.

His unusual abilities make him particularly effective against targets who have already escaped conventional security measures.

Umbra can move through areas of darkness, establish powerful containment barriers, detect and track targets through physical obstructions, and communicate with non-sapient animals.

Combined with extensive field experience, these abilities have earned Umbra a simple reputation within Spectre:

If Umbra has been assigned to find someone, hiding is usually only a temporary solution.

Despite this reputation, Umbra is not generally intimidating or hostile toward fellow personnel.

Outside active operations, he is friendly, calm, and surprisingly approachable.

When the hunt begins, however, his demeanor changes considerably.

Spectre Division

Umbra serves within the Spectre Division, the principal military-policing formation of the Hell Hosts.

Spectre has unusual origins.

The division traces its history to robotic units formerly associated with the Terrorism Control Agency and Free Order Rebellion.

Following the transition into the Hell Host era, surviving machines were repurposed for security and policing duties.

Over time, the formation expanded beyond its robotic origins.

Human and other organic personnel began joining Spectre, transforming it into a broader military-policing organization responsible for maintaining security throughout Hell Host territory and installations.

Its responsibilities now include:

  • Military policing
  • Installation security
  • Fugitive recovery
  • Deserter apprehension
  • Prisoner handling
  • Internal security
  • Restricted-area enforcement
  • Search operations
  • Personnel recovery
  • Investigation support
  • High-risk arrests

Umbra is one of Spectre’s specialist field operatives.

While conventional Spectre units are capable of patrols, security operations, arrests, and military law enforcement, Umbra is primarily deployed when a target has proven unusually difficult to locate or contain.

Cross-Branch Deployment

Although formally assigned to the Spectre Division, Umbra frequently operates alongside other Hell Host formations.

This practice led older records to describe his military assignment simply as:

“Goes to any really.”

The description is remarkably informal.

It is also essentially correct.

Umbra may be temporarily attached to Doom Corps combat units, Fleet Guard personnel, intelligence operations, exploration teams, or other formations when his tracking and containment capabilities are required.

He does not consider temporary attachment equivalent to reassignment.

Wherever he operates, Umbra remains Spectre.

Fugitive Recovery

Umbra specializes in locating and apprehending individuals who have successfully evaded ordinary Hell Host security.

Targets may include:

  • Deserters
  • Escaped prisoners
  • Infiltrators
  • Saboteurs
  • Stolen-asset carriers
  • Rogue personnel
  • Hostile intelligence operatives
  • Missing persons
  • Dangerous individuals requiring containment

Umbra does not automatically assume every person he tracks is guilty of a crime.

His responsibility is to locate them and carry out the orders attached to the operation.

Depending upon circumstances, that may mean arrest.

It may mean rescue.

It may mean surveillance.

In extreme situations, it may mean elimination.

Umbra prefers apprehension when possible.

Dead targets cannot answer questions.

Shadow Walker

Umbra possesses an anomalous ability known as Shadow Walker.

The ability allows him to move between sufficiently dark locations through a form of short-range spatial displacement.

Umbra appears to enter one area of darkness and emerge from another nearby.

The exact mechanism remains poorly understood.

Shadow Walker does not simply make Umbra invisible.

He physically relocates.

The ability is most effective in environments containing large areas of shadow or limited illumination.

This makes Umbra exceptionally dangerous during:

  • Night operations
  • Urban pursuit
  • Interior searches
  • Power outages
  • Underground operations
  • Dense wilderness operations

Bright environments significantly restrict the ability.

Umbra cannot simply use the darkness of outer space to teleport across astronomical distances.

Range remains limited, and he requires a viable destination.

He also appears to need some awareness of where he intends to emerge.

Attempting uncontrolled movement into completely unknown locations carries considerable risk.

Lockdown

Lockdown allows Umbra to establish a localized containment barrier around a designated area.

The barrier resembles advanced hard-light or holographic shielding, although the exact relationship between Umbra’s ability and conventional Hell Host shield technology remains unclear.

Once established, Lockdown can prevent personnel from easily entering or leaving the contained area.

Umbra can dismiss the barrier almost immediately.

This allows him to manipulate movement during pursuit.

A target may believe they have escaped containment only for Umbra to drop one section, allow movement, and reactivate the barrier in a more advantageous position.

The system is highly resistant to ordinary infantry weapons.

It is not indestructible.

Heavy weapons, sustained concentrated fire, powerful anomalous attacks, or specialist shield-disruption equipment can eventually compromise it.

Larger containment areas also place greater strain upon the ability.

Umbra therefore prefers relatively small Lockdown zones when dealing with dangerous individuals.

Search Warrant

Search Warrant is Umbra’s primary detection and tracking ability.

It allows him to scan individuals, objects, and areas through many conventional physical obstructions.

Walls and ordinary structures provide limited protection against the scan.

Once Umbra successfully identifies a target, he can establish a tracking signature that allows him to continue following them after visual contact has been lost.

Search Warrant is particularly effective when pursuing targets through complex environments.

Potential applications include:

  • Detecting personnel behind walls
  • Locating hidden individuals
  • Identifying movement through structures
  • Searching enclosed spaces
  • Tracking previously scanned targets
  • Locating concealed objects
  • Following fugitives through populated environments

The ability is not omniscient.

Heavy shielding, specialized countermeasures, signal interference, anomalous materials, extreme distance, and certain environmental conditions can disrupt or prevent a scan.

Search Warrant also does not automatically tell Umbra everything about the person being detected.

It finds the target.

The investigation still requires an investigator.

Friend of Beasts

Perhaps Umbra’s strangest ability is known as Friend of Beasts.

Umbra can establish a limited mental connection with many non-sapient animals.

This allows him to communicate simple concepts and receive sensory information from them.

Animals also appear unusually comfortable around him.

Species that would ordinarily react defensively to an unfamiliar armored soldier frequently tolerate Umbra’s presence and may actively cooperate with him.

The ability can allow Umbra to perceive information through an animal’s senses.

He may therefore use local wildlife as an unconventional reconnaissance network.

A bird may have seen someone cross a rooftop.

A rodent may have encountered movement inside a damaged structure.

A domestic animal may recognize the person Umbra is searching for.

Communication is not equivalent to human conversation.

Umbra primarily receives impressions, images, emotions, directions, and simple concepts.

The intelligence of the animal strongly influences the quality of information available.

Umbra also refuses to treat animals as disposable reconnaissance equipment.

If using one would unnecessarily endanger it, he generally finds another method.

The Animal Problem

Hell Host researchers have attempted to determine why Umbra possesses Friend of Beasts.

No widely accepted explanation exists.

Shadow Walker demonstrates obvious spatial properties.

Search Warrant concerns perception and tracking.

Lockdown concerns containment.

Friend of Beasts allows Umbra to communicate with a dog.

Attempts to construct a single theoretical mechanism explaining all four abilities have produced inconsistent results.

Umbra has been asked for his own explanation.

He does not have one.

This does not appear to bother him.

Military Policing

Umbra does not view Spectre Division as an occupying force within the Hell Hosts.

He considers military policing necessary precisely because Hell Host personnel possess enormous amounts of authority, weaponry, and access.

A soldier carrying advanced military equipment can cause considerably more damage than an ordinary civilian if they abuse that position.

Spectre exists partly to ensure that military status does not place someone beyond accountability.

Umbra therefore treats rank differently during enforcement operations.

A senior officer may possess greater command authority.

They do not possess permission to ignore military law.

This attitude has occasionally made him unpopular.

Umbra considers popularity irrelevant to the job.

Pursuit Doctrine

Umbra is exceptionally patient when tracking a target.

He rarely chases blindly.

Instead, he gradually reduces the number of places the target can safely go.

Search Warrant establishes their location.

Spectre units restrict conventional escape routes.

Lockdown removes physical options.

Shadow Walker allows Umbra to bypass obstacles.

Local wildlife can provide information in environments where technological surveillance becomes unreliable.

The result is less a conventional chase and more a shrinking operational space.

Umbra prefers targets to realize surrender is their safest remaining option.

If they continue running, he continues following.

“You can keep going. I have time.”

Weapons

Umbra does not maintain a single permanent signature weapon.

His loadout changes according to the assignment.

This reflects the enormous variation between Spectre operations.

Tracking an unarmed deserter does not require the same equipment as pursuing a hostile augmented operative through a warzone.

Umbra selects weapons from the wider Hell Host Arsenal based upon mission requirements.

Common options may include:

Umbra generally prefers the minimum level of force appropriate to the target.

When heavier force becomes necessary, he has no hesitation about escalating.

Personality

Umbra is considerably friendlier than his appearance and reputation suggest.

Outside active operations, he is calm, approachable, and capable of casual humor.

He generally treats lower-ranking personnel with the same basic respect he gives senior officers.

Umbra does not cultivate fear for its own sake.

He sees little value in making ordinary personnel uncomfortable merely because he works for military police.

During operations, his personality becomes far more serious.

He stops joking.

His speech becomes concise.

His attention narrows almost entirely onto the mission.

Umbra rarely threatens fugitives unnecessarily.

He prefers clear instructions.

“Stop running.”

If the target refuses, he continues the pursuit.

Sergeant Major

Umbra holds the rank of Sergeant Major.

His position reflects extensive field experience rather than a transition away from active operations.

He remains heavily involved in Spectre deployments and frequently works directly alongside junior personnel.

Umbra is particularly experienced in coordinating search teams during large-scale manhunts.

He may divide an operational area between robotic Spectre units, organic personnel, drones, surveillance systems, and his own anomalous reconnaissance.

Despite his rank, Umbra has little interest in becoming permanently confined to administrative work.

He is most useful in the field.

Everyone involved is aware of this.

Relationship with Spectre Units

Umbra works extensively alongside the robotic personnel that formed the original backbone of the Spectre Division.

He respects their reliability and methodical approach to enforcement.

Likewise, Spectre units benefit from Umbra’s ability to operate beyond conventional sensor limitations.

His presence often bridges the division’s older machine-dominated structure and its modern mixed personnel.

Umbra has occasionally joked that robots are easier to work with because they rarely argue about warrants.

The robots have not confirmed whether this was funny.

Relationship with the PCE

Umbra occasionally works alongside the Protection and Crime Enforcement when military and civilian jurisdiction overlap.

The organizations perform fundamentally different roles.

The PCE is a broader law-enforcement organization operating within its recognized jurisdictions.

Spectre is a Hell Host military-policing formation.

Joint operations may occur when:

  • A Hell Host fugitive enters civilian territory
  • Civilian suspects enter Hell Host installations
  • Military equipment is stolen
  • Jurisdiction crosses planetary or organizational boundaries
  • A threat affects both civilian and military populations

Umbra generally respects PCE investigators and avoids interfering with legitimate civilian jurisdiction.

Arguments over exactly whose suspect someone is have nevertheless occurred.

Animals

Umbra genuinely likes animals.

This is independent of their usefulness to his abilities.

Personnel have repeatedly observed him stopping during non-critical operations to interact with local wildlife.

His unusual connection means animals often approach him despite his armor.

This has created several situations in which the intimidating Sergeant Major responsible for hunting dangerous military fugitives has been discovered sitting quietly with a small animal beside him.

Umbra does not consider this contradictory.

He has also developed a habit of thanking animals that assist him during searches.

Nobody has successfully convinced him this is unnecessary.

Origin of Abilities

The origin of Umbra’s abilities remains undocumented.

There is currently no confirmed explanation connecting:

  • Shadow Walker
  • Lockdown
  • Search Warrant
  • Friend of Beasts

Whether the abilities originate from a single phenomenon or several unrelated sources is unknown.

Umbra remains biologically classified as human.

He has displayed no obvious signs of Element 95 corruption, Ascension, or known species alteration.

Until further evidence becomes available, Hell Host records classify his abilities as anomalous but stable.

Reputation

Among ordinary Hell Host personnel, Umbra’s reputation is unusual.

He is generally liked.

People simply prefer not to hear that he has been assigned to find them.

Among Spectre personnel, he is regarded as one of the division’s most capable pursuit specialists.

Among fugitives, his reputation is considerably less positive.

Escaping a checkpoint is possible.

Evading surveillance is possible.

Losing a patrol is possible.

Doing all three only changes who gets sent next.

Sometimes that person is Umbra.

Unknowns

Several aspects of Umbra remain undocumented:

  • His real name
  • His age
  • His exact place of birth
  • His life before the Hell Hosts
  • When his abilities first appeared
  • The origin of Shadow Walker
  • Whether Lockdown is entirely anomalous or interacts with technological systems
  • The exact mechanism behind Search Warrant
  • Why animals universally appear to regard him as an ally
  • Whether all four abilities share a common origin

Umbra has shown little interest in answering most of these questions.

For now, Hell Host records contain what operational personnel actually need to know.

He is Umbra.

He is Spectre.

And if he has been sent to find someone, he usually does.
