Nate Anderson, better known as Scyther, is a Hell Host operative and one of the oldest living humans known to the faction.

Scyther was originally an American soldier who fought during the Second World War.

In 1945, he was captured by German forces and subjected to a series of experimental procedures.

One of those experiments changed his life permanently.

Scyther was forced through a prototype portal.

The portal did not lead anywhere on Earth.

It opened into the Farlands.

He would not return for approximately two thousand years.

When Scyther finally emerged, the world he had known was gone.

Human civilization had spread far beyond Earth.

Wars had risen and fallen.

Entire political systems, cultures, technologies, and generations had passed without him.

And Scyther himself was no longer entirely what he had been in 1945.

The Farlands had changed him.

Years later, that connection would become the cause of one of the most dangerous events of his life.

Early Life

Nate Anderson was born in the United States during the early 20th century.

Little surviving information exists regarding his civilian life before military service.

During the Second World War, Anderson served as an American soldier.

He was eventually deployed into combat in Europe.

In 1945, Anderson was captured by German forces.

Rather than being treated exclusively as a conventional prisoner of war, he became the subject of experimental research.

The full scope of the program remains unknown.

Much of the surviving information comes from fragmented historical records recovered centuries later.

One experiment involved a prototype portal.

Its creators did not fully understand where it led.

Scyther would.

The 1945 Portal Experiment

In 1945, Anderson was forced through an experimental portal created by German researchers.

The technology was primitive compared to modern Hell Host systems.

Yet somehow, the portal successfully connected normal space with the Farlands.

Anderson crossed the threshold.

The portal closed behind him.

He was presumed dead.

He was not.

Two Thousand Years in the Farlands

Scyther became trapped within the Farlands.

Time within the region does not behave consistently with conventional spacetime.

Exactly how Anderson experienced the passage of time remains difficult to determine.

From the perspective of the wider galaxy, approximately two thousand years passed before he returned.

Scyther survived.

How he accomplished this remains one of the greatest mysteries surrounding him.

The Farlands are hostile to conventional life.

Element 95 contamination, anomalous geography, unstable physics, hostile entities, temporal irregularities, and psychological effects make even short expeditions extraordinarily dangerous.

Scyther endured exposure on a scale few known humans ever have.

The experience altered him permanently.

When he eventually emerged from the Farlands, his biology and relationship with conventional reality had changed.

Return

Scyther returned to human civilization approximately two millennia after his disappearance.

For him, almost everything was unfamiliar.

The United States he had served belonged to ancient history.

The Second World War had become an event studied in historical archives.

Humanity had expanded beyond Earth.

Entire worlds were inhabited.

Artificial intelligence, interstellar civilization, anomalous technology, and species unknown to 20th-century humanity had become ordinary parts of existence.

Scyther adapted.

How quickly he accepted the new era surprised many personnel who later encountered him.

However, adaptation did not mean the transition was easy.

His original family, comrades, nation, and entire generation had vanished into history.

Everyone he had ever known was dead.

Scyther was alive because something impossible had taken him away.

Joining the Hell Hosts

At some point following his return, Scyther encountered the Hell Hosts.

His unusual survival history, combat experience, and Farlands-altered abilities made him an obvious candidate for operations involving extreme or anomalous threats.

Scyther eventually joined the faction and became a highly effective field operative.

He specializes in close-range elimination, hostile-environment operations, and missions involving anomalous phenomena.

His modern military service combines skills learned as a conventional soldier with abilities acquired through Farlands exposure.

Despite his age and history, Scyther does not behave like an ancient relic.

He adapted to modern weapons, tactics, technology, and military doctrine remarkably effectively.

Farlands Alteration

Scyther’s prolonged exposure to the Farlands permanently altered his body.

The exact mechanism remains uncertain.

Element 95 exposure is considered one of the primary factors, although Scyther’s condition does not resemble ordinary E95 corruption.

Instead, his body appears to have developed a persistent resonance with Farlands phenomena.

This condition grants significant abilities.

It also means that the Farlands never completely stopped affecting him.

Farlands Resonance

Scyther maintains a persistent anomalous connection with the Farlands.

This connection can intensify under stress, exposure to Element 95, proximity to unstable spatial phenomena, or emotional distress.

Observable effects include:

  • Elevated physical performance
  • Increased reflexes
  • Spatial distortion
  • Temporary energy discharge
  • Altered sensory perception
  • Abnormal interaction with portals
  • Increased resistance to Farlands conditions

The resonance is not entirely beneficial.

Extended activation can destabilize Scyther physically and psychologically.

Temporal Displacement

Scyther can produce short-duration displacement effects that distort his position relative to conventional space.

To observers, he may appear to:

  • Move suddenly across short distances
  • Vanish and reappear
  • Skip portions of normal movement
  • React faster than physically expected
  • Momentarily occupy an uncertain position

The effect resembles teleportation but may instead involve localized spatial or temporal displacement.

Even Scyther cannot fully explain the mechanism.

His prolonged Farlands exposure appears to have fundamentally altered the way his body interacts with spacetime.

Physical Enhancement

Scyther possesses enhanced strength, speed, reflexes, endurance, and resistance to injury.

These traits become more pronounced when his Farlands resonance intensifies.

His capabilities are not constant.

Under normal conditions, Scyther remains far closer to a highly capable soldier.

During periods of extreme resonance, his physical abilities can increase dramatically.

This increased power is accompanied by greater instability.

Farlands Surge State

Under severe stress or elevated anomalous exposure, Scyther can enter a condition referred to as a Farlands Surge State.

During this state, the connection between Scyther and the Farlands intensifies considerably.

His body becomes visibly altered.

Dark anomalous material and blue-violet energy can spread across portions of his armor and exposed surfaces.

Spatial distortion increases around him.

Physical capability rises sharply.

The Surge State can provide:

  • Significant increases in strength
  • Extreme reflex enhancement
  • Increased resilience
  • Greater spatial displacement capability
  • Heightened Farlands perception
  • Increased resistance to anomalous environments

The state is extremely dangerous.

Greater Farlands resonance also increases psychological instability and Element 95 influence.

The Surge State is therefore treated as an emergency capability rather than a routine combat mode.

Farlands Dampener

Scyther carries a specialized device known as the Farlands Dampener.

The system monitors anomalous energy levels associated with his Farlands resonance and attempts to reduce dangerous surges.

It can suppress some of the physical and neurological effects associated with increasing instability.

The device does not remove Scyther’s abilities.

Instead, it helps prevent those abilities from escalating beyond his ability to control them.

The Dampener became particularly important as Scyther’s condition worsened prior to his Ascension Event.

Element 95 Corruption

Scyther’s original Farlands exposure did not immediately destroy his mind.

For years, he remained functional.

Eventually, this changed.

A progressive form of Element 95 contamination began affecting him.

Unlike ordinary physical corruption, much of the early damage was psychological.

Scyther began experiencing:

  • Intrusive thoughts
  • Increasing fixation on the Farlands
  • Memory disturbances
  • Emotional instability
  • Compulsive behavior
  • Altered perceptions
  • Increasing difficulty resisting Farlands resonance

The corruption progressed slowly enough that Scyther remained operational for a significant period.

This made the danger harder to recognize.

He did not suddenly become hostile.

He became increasingly convinced of something.

He needed to return.

And eventually, he became convinced that Destiny needed to return with him.

Fixation on Destiny

As Scyther’s Element 95 corruption progressed, he developed an increasingly powerful fixation on Destiny.

Why the corruption specifically focused upon Destiny remains unclear.

Scyther increasingly believed that she needed to accompany him to the Farlands.

Whether this belief originated from his own damaged reasoning, Element 95 influence, something within the Farlands, or another entity remains unknown.

Scyther’s behavior deteriorated gradually.

He remained recognizably himself for much of the process.

That made the situation considerably more dangerous.

The person making increasingly irrational decisions was still an experienced Hell Host officer.

Return to the Farlands

Eventually, Scyther’s corruption reached a critical point.

Using his connection to the Farlands, he created a portal.

He took Destiny with him.

She did not go willingly.

Both disappeared into the Farlands.

The event marked the beginning of their shared descent toward Ascension.

Scyther and Destiny

Within the Farlands, Scyther and Destiny experienced progressively greater Element 95 exposure.

Scyther had already been deteriorating before their arrival.

Destiny now began experiencing similar corruption.

The region affected both individuals physically and psychologically.

As exposure continued, conventional human biology became increasingly unstable.

Element 95 no longer behaved simply as an external contaminant.

It began integrating with them.

Their bodies changed.

Their perception changed.

Their connection to conventional reality weakened.

Eventually, both crossed a threshold from which ordinary recovery was no longer possible.

They Ascended.

Ascension Event

Scyther’s Ascension was not the same event as his original transformation following the 1945 portal experiment.

The distinction is critical.

His original Farlands exposure altered him.

The later event rewrote him.

The exact nature of Scyther’s Ascended state remains difficult to define.

Element 95, prolonged Farlands exposure, psychological corruption, and anomalous environmental conditions combined to transform him into something fundamentally different from the soldier who had originally entered the region.

Destiny underwent her own transformation during the same period.

The two Ascensions are therefore deeply connected.

Whether they were caused by identical mechanisms remains uncertain.

Psychological Profile

Scyther is generally calm, charismatic, and surprisingly approachable.

His personality contrasts sharply with his history.

He does not spend every waking moment behaving like a traumatized relic from another age.

He jokes.

He socializes.

He adapts.

He has learned to exist in a civilization separated from his birth by thousands of years.

However, there are subjects that change him immediately.

The Farlands are one.

1945 is another.

Scyther can discuss combat openly.

He is considerably less willing to discuss what occurred during his original imprisonment within the Farlands.

Humor often functions as both genuine personality and psychological armor.

Displacement Trauma

Scyther’s psychological history is unusual even by Hell Host standards.

He did not simply lose people he cared about.

He lost his entire era.

Everyone Scyther knew before entering the portal died centuries before he returned.

The language, technology, politics, cities, military doctrine, culture, and social structures of his youth became historical material.

Even his own war became ancient history.

This creates a form of isolation few other Hell Host personnel can fully understand.

Scyther adapted to the future.

That does not mean the future ever completely became home.

Combat Style

Scyther combines old instincts with modern warfare.

Despite originally training during the Second World War, he has mastered contemporary Hell Host weapons and tactical systems.

He specializes in:

  • Close-quarters elimination
  • Rapid assault
  • Hostile-environment combat
  • Anomalous-threat engagement
  • Portal operations
  • High-risk extractions
  • Farlands expeditions

His spatial abilities allow him to reposition unpredictably during combat.

Scyther often uses conventional gunfire to pressure opponents before rapidly closing distance.

He is extremely dangerous in confined environments.

VH-27 Ravager

The VH-27 Ravager is Scyther’s primary heavy assault rifle.

The weapon is configured for high-intensity combat and close-to-medium-range engagements.

Its durability and stopping power make it well suited to the environments in which Scyther commonly operates.

Scyther favors weapons capable of continuing to function under extreme conditions rather than systems requiring delicate maintenance.

DP-12 Wraith Pistols

Scyther carries a pair of DP-12 Wraith pulse pistols as secondary weapons.

Their compact design allows rapid use during close-range engagements and transitions involving spatial displacement.

Scyther frequently uses the pistols while moving at speeds that make conventional rifle handling impractical.

Shadowbreacher

The Shadowbreacher is Scyther’s primary combat knife.

It is built for durability and close-quarters lethality rather than ceremony.

Despite access to considerably more advanced weapons, Scyther maintains a strong preference for carrying a blade.

Some habits survived 1945.

Relationship with Destiny

Scyther’s relationship with Destiny became one of the most important and tragic connections in his life.

Before the Ascension Event, the two were fellow members of the Hell Hosts.

As Scyther’s Element 95 corruption progressed, his perception of Destiny became increasingly distorted.

He became convinced that she needed to accompany him to the Farlands.

Eventually, he forced that outcome.

Destiny’s unwilling transportation into the Farlands remains one of the most serious actions Scyther committed while under E95 influence.

The consequences transformed both of them.

Any account of their later relationship must therefore distinguish between Scyther’s genuine personality and the corruption progressively overtaking him.

Relationship with the Farlands

No location has shaped Scyther more profoundly than the Farlands.

It stole him from his century.

It kept him for two thousand years.

It changed his body.

It gave him abilities.

It remained inside him after he escaped.

And eventually, it drew him back.

Scyther’s relationship with the Farlands therefore cannot easily be described as hatred, fear, attachment, or belonging.

It is all of them.

The Farlands are simultaneously his prison, his source of power, his greatest trauma, and a place that became more familiar to him than the world he was born into.

That contradiction made his later corruption particularly dangerous.

Reputation

Scyther is unusual even among Hell Host anomalous personnel.

To ordinary soldiers, he is an experienced Lieutenant Commander and highly effective close-quarters specialist.

To historians, he is effectively a living artifact from the Second World War.

To Farlands researchers, he is an unprecedented long-term survivor.

To anomalous research personnel, he is evidence that humans can survive levels of Farlands exposure previously considered impossible.

To Scyther himself, he is simply someone who survived far longer than he was ever supposed to.

Unknowns

Several major questions surrounding Scyther remain unresolved:

  • What exactly happened during his original two thousand years in the Farlands?
  • How did he survive?
  • How much time did Scyther personally experience?
  • What caused the original 1945 portal to connect specifically to the Farlands?
  • Were the German researchers aware of what they had discovered?
  • Why did Scyther develop stable Farlands abilities instead of dying or immediately succumbing to Element 95?
  • Why did his corruption worsen only much later?
  • Why did the E95 influence focus upon Destiny?
  • Was something within the Farlands deliberately influencing him?
  • Did Scyther create the later portal entirely through his own power?
  • What precisely caused the transition from corruption into Ascension?
  • How much of Scyther remained after the Ascension Event?
