Astral Shear

The Endless Black Ocean

Astral Shear is a vast oceanic world located within the deepest outer regions of the Voidlands. The planet is almost entirely covered by a seemingly endless black ocean stretching across the surface without visible continents, stable islands, or permanent landmasses.

The waters of Astral Shear are unnaturally dark, absorbing nearly all visible light and reflecting the surrounding stars like fractured mirrors across infinite darkness.

The planet is the homeworld of:

The Anchorless Caste

One of the oldest and most isolated civilizations within the Voidlands.

The Anchorless

The Anchorless are a mysterious Void-adapted people believed to have abandoned conventional concepts of:

  • permanence
  • territory
  • identity
  • and physical stability

Unlike many Voidlands civilizations, the Anchorless do not construct massive cities or fixed structures.

Instead, they drift endlessly across Astral Shear within:

  • floating sanctuaries
  • mobile fortress-vessels
  • living ocean platforms
  • drifting temple fleets

The caste believes attachment to fixed existence creates weakness.

Their philosophy teaches:

“To remain still is to be consumed.”

Environment

Astral Shear is defined almost entirely by:

  • endless black oceans
  • perpetual twilight skies
  • dimensional storms
  • abyssal trenches
  • floating monoliths
  • drifting fog banks
  • deep-ocean anomaly zones

The ocean itself displays highly abnormal properties.

Long-range scans struggle to determine:

  • accurate depth
  • ocean composition
  • gravitational consistency
  • or subsurface structure

In some regions, the water appears:

  • partially non-physical
  • reflective of impossible stars
  • or deeper internally than planetary dimensions should allow.

The Abyssal Depths

Beneath Astral Shear lie immense abyssal zones believed to descend far beyond normal planetary structure.

Some theories suggest the trenches connect directly to:

  • lower Void layers
  • collapsed dimensions
  • or regions outside observable reality

Very few expeditions have returned from the deeper waters.

Those that do often report:

  • impossible creatures
  • distant lights beneath the ocean
  • reversed gravity currents
  • whispers transmitted through the water itself
  • and massive moving shapes below the surface

The Drifting Sanctuaries

The Anchorless live within enormous mobile settlements known as:

Drifting Sanctuaries

These structures continuously traverse the ocean and are rarely found in the same location twice.

The sanctuaries contain:

  • ritual chambers
  • Void navigation halls
  • meditation sectors
  • dimensional observatories
  • tide engines
  • and floating archive vaults

Some sanctuaries are believed to be partially alive.

Tide Engines

The Anchorless utilize mysterious Void-based systems known as:

Tide Engines

These mechanisms manipulate:

  • ocean movement
  • gravitational flow
  • dimensional tides
  • and spatial drift

The Engines allow Anchorless vessels to navigate regions where normal physics collapses completely.

Many outsiders cannot comprehend how the systems function.

Void Tides

Astral Shear experiences enormous phenomena called:

Void Tides

During these events:

  • the ocean rises unnaturally
  • reality weakens
  • stars distort overhead
  • dimensional fractures emerge
  • and sections of the sea appear to vanish entirely

The Anchorless consider the Tides sacred.

Many major rituals occur during these periods.

Oceanic Lifeforms

The black oceans of Astral Shear contain countless unknown entities.

Documented encounters include:

  • abyssal leviathans
  • partially transparent predators
  • luminous Void organisms
  • living storm formations
  • and creatures visible only through reflection

Some lifeforms appear capable of:

  • phasing through matter
  • manipulating perception
  • or existing simultaneously in multiple locations.

Relationship to the Voidlands

Unlike civilizations attempting to dominate the Voidlands, the Anchorless instead seek:
adaptation through surrender.

They believe the Void cannot be controlled—
only survived through motion and acceptance.

Some Reality Weavers consider the Anchorless primitive.

Others consider them wiser than any known civilization.

Reputation

Across the galaxy, Astral Shear is known as:

  • the Endless Black Ocean
  • one of the most isolated worlds in the Voidlands
  • the homeworld of the Anchorless
  • a planet where the sea itself appears connected to the Void

Among the Anchorless, one phrase is spoken before every voyage:

“The ocean does not remember names.
Only movement.”
