Act 3 — The Betrayal
Era: The Fractured Stars (Era 1)
Previous: Act 2 — Rise of TCA and FOR
Next: Act 4 — The New World
Overview
Act 3 follows the gradual collapse of the relationship between William Grant and Michael Cross, culminating in Michael’s betrayal of the man who had fought beside him for years.
Following the events of Act 2, William and Michael remain closely connected despite the increasingly unstable world around them. Their partnership has survived years of contracts, warfare, loss, and conflict, having developed from an accidental encounter aboard a stolen ship into one of the most important relationships in either man’s life.
However, differences that had existed between them for years begin becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
As the continuing conflict between the Terrorism Control Agency and Free Order Rebellion reshapes the world around them, William and Michael begin questioning their loyalties, methods, and ultimately the futures they want to create.
Their disagreements gradually develop into a divide that neither is able to repair.
The Act culminates in Michael’s betrayal of William, permanently destroying the partnership established during Act 1 — Predator and Onyx’s Origins and sending both men down dramatically different paths.
In the aftermath, Michael begins looking toward the creation of something new.
William and Michael
The relationship between William Grant and Michael Cross forms the central focus of Act 3.
The two originally met by chance while attempting to steal the same military transport, eventually becoming partners and later joining Blackwake. Their experiences together created a powerful bond built through years of surviving dangerous operations and repeatedly placing their lives in one another’s hands.
Despite this friendship, William and Michael have never been identical.
Earlier events demonstrated differences in their attitudes toward violence, loyalty, authority, and the treatment of their enemies. For years, these disagreements remained secondary to their friendship.
During Act 3, they no longer do.
Neither man immediately abandons the other. Instead, their relationship deteriorates gradually as disagreements become increasingly personal and their visions for the future begin moving in different directions.
The eventual betrayal therefore marks the destruction of a relationship that had survived almost everything else.
Continuing TCA–FOR War
Although Act 3 focuses heavily on William and Michael, the TCA–FOR War continues.
The conflict between the Terrorism Control Agency and Free Order Rebellion remains an important part of the wider political and military situation, with both factions continuing to develop following the enormous escalation of Act 2.
Events within the war also continue influencing the people and organizations surrounding William and Michael.
The conflict is revisited directly during Sub-Act 3.3 — Men at Arms, providing a wider perspective on the continuing struggle between the two factions while the central relationship of the Act begins to deteriorate.
Sub-Acts
Sub-Act 3.1 — After the War
The aftermath of Act 2 establishes the changing situation surrounding William and Michael.
Both men have been affected by the conflicts and experiences of the previous Acts, while the wider consequences of the TCA–FOR War continue developing around them.
Although William and Michael remain partners, early signs of tension begin appearing between them.
Sub-Act 3.2 — Fault Lines
The differences between William and Michael become increasingly difficult to ignore.
Disagreements surrounding their actions, loyalties, methods, and future begin placing genuine pressure upon their relationship. Despite this, the two continue operating together and neither is yet willing to abandon the partnership they have built.
The foundations of their relationship remain strong, but cracks are beginning to form.
Sub-Act 3.3 — Men at Arms
The focus returns to the ongoing conflict between the Terrorism Control Agency and Free Order Rebellion.
Both factions continue adapting to the increasingly large-scale war established during Act 2, with their military forces, leadership, and objectives continuing to evolve as the conflict develops.
The events demonstrate that the TCA–FOR War continues independently of William and Michael’s personal struggles and remains a major force shaping the wider galaxy.
Sub-Act 3.4 — Brothers
William and Michael’s friendship takes centre stage.
Despite the tensions beginning to emerge between them, the bond created through years of fighting and surviving together remains genuine. Their shared history and continued loyalty demonstrate why their partnership has endured for so long.
The Sub-Act serves as one of the final major demonstrations of William and Michael’s relationship before it begins to collapse beyond repair.
Sub-Act 3.5 — Point of No Return
Tensions between William and Michael finally approach a breaking point.
Events force both men to confront disagreements that can no longer be ignored or pushed aside. Decisions are made that begin separating their futures, and the possibility of repairing their relationship becomes increasingly uncertain.
The circumstances that will ultimately lead to Michael’s betrayal begin taking their final shape.
Sub-Act 3.6 — The Betrayal
Michael betrays William.
The partnership that began years earlier aboard the Orion finally collapses, permanently destroying the relationship between the two men.
The betrayal becomes one of the defining events in both of their lives and fundamentally changes the direction of their futures.
The full circumstances, motivations, and consequences surrounding the betrayal remain to be established.
Sub-Act 3.7 — A New Order
In the aftermath of the betrayal, William and Michael are left on separate paths.
Rather than attempting to restore what has been destroyed, Michael begins looking toward the future and considering the creation of something entirely new.
The ideas that will eventually lead to the formation of the Free World Order begin taking shape.

Themes
Act 3 returns the story to the relationship at the heart of the earliest Acts.
Where Act 1 follows William and Michael becoming partners and Act 2 expands outward into large-scale warfare, Act 3 examines what happens when the relationship between them can no longer survive the people they are becoming.
Loyalty, betrayal, ideology, brotherhood, and conflicting visions of the future become central to the Act.
The betrayal does not erase the relationship that came before it. Instead, its significance comes from the history shared between William and Michael and the fact that, for years, each had repeatedly chosen to remain beside the other.
Consequences
Michael’s betrayal permanently separates William Grant and Michael Cross.
The partnership established during Act 1 is destroyed, and both men begin moving toward dramatically different futures.
For Michael, the aftermath becomes the beginning of a new ambition. Rather than simply joining another existing power, he begins considering the creation of an organization built around his own vision of the future.
These ideas eventually develop into the Free World Order.
William, meanwhile, is left to confront the betrayal of one of the people he trusted most, becoming another major event in the path that will eventually lead him toward his own future.
The consequences of their separation extend far beyond either individual. In time, William and Michael will stand at the centre of opposing powers, transforming a deeply personal betrayal into a rivalry with consequences across the Omicron Galaxy.
