Viral is a heavily altered Hell Host operative and biological containment subject whose body has become permanently bonded with an adaptive viral organism.
Originally human, Viral was exposed to an experimental biological agent during a catastrophic containment failure at the age of sixteen.
Rather than killing him, the organism bonded with its host.
It rewrote him.
Viral survived the incident, but his biology was permanently transformed. The organism now exists throughout his body as an adaptive symbiotic system capable of consuming biomass, restructuring tissue, producing biological armor, mimicking other organisms, and rapidly responding to physical threats.
Hell Host researchers continue to refer to the organism as a viral strain due to its original classification.
Whether it can still accurately be considered a conventional virus is uncertain.
Viral remains partially capable of controlling the organism.
How long that will remain true is unknown.
The Containment Incident
At the age of sixteen, the individual who would later become Viral was involved in an experimental program attempting to weaponize an adaptive viral strain.
The project ended catastrophically.
A containment failure resulted in full exposure throughout the facility.
Most personnel involved in the incident were killed.
Viral survived.
The experimental organism entered his body but did not behave as anticipated. Rather than simply infecting and destroying its host, it began integrating itself into his biological systems.
Human tissue and viral biomass became increasingly difficult to distinguish.
The organism altered his muscles, nervous system, skeletal structure, immune response, and regenerative processes.
Eventually, separating host from organism became impossible without almost certainly killing both.
By the time Hell Host containment personnel regained control of the situation, the original experiment was effectively gone.
In its place was Viral.
Current Condition
Viral is no longer considered biologically baseline human.
However, neither is he considered a completely separate organism.
The relationship between Viral and the adaptive organism appears symbiotic, although the balance between host and symbiote is unstable.
Viral retains:
- Human memories
- Human emotions
- Independent thought
- Personal identity
- Communication
- Tactical reasoning
- Recognition of other personnel
The organism possesses its own adaptive biological responses and may occasionally act without deliberate instruction from Viral.
Whether these responses represent instinct, autonomous biological behavior, or an independent consciousness remains unknown.
Viral himself struggles with the distinction.
He does not know where his original biology ends and the organism begins.
This has produced persistent questions surrounding his identity.
“Am I still me… or just what’s left?”
Physical Appearance
Viral’s transformed state is highly distinctive.
Much of his body is covered in constantly shifting layers of dark biological armor with blue, violet, and red coloration appearing throughout the material.
The armor is not conventional equipment.
It is alive.
Sections of the organism can thicken, retract, reshape, or reinforce themselves in response to environmental conditions and incoming threats.
Viral’s left arm has undergone particularly extensive mutation.
The limb can form a large symbiotic blade composed of hardened biological material capable of functioning as a close-range weapon.
Other sections of his body display similar adaptive properties.
His physical appearance may change depending upon:
- Biomass levels
- Recent assimilation
- Injury
- Stress
- Environmental conditions
- Threat response
- The organism’s current state
As a result, Viral does not possess an entirely static combat form.
Abilities
Consumption
Viral can consume living organisms and assimilate their biological mass.
This process allows the symbiote to incorporate external biomass into Viral’s body.
Assimilated material can be used to:
- Repair injuries
- Replace damaged tissue
- Increase physical mass
- Increase strength
- Support biological adaptation
- Restructure parts of Viral’s body
- Produce temporary mimicry
Consumption is one of Viral’s most powerful abilities.
It is also one of his most dangerous.
Every organism consumed increases the amount of active biomass within Viral.
As his available biomass increases, so does his physical capability.
However, excessive consumption pushes Viral toward an unstable condition known as Critical Mass.
For this reason, Viral’s consumption is monitored whenever possible during controlled deployments.
The more he consumes, the stronger he becomes.
The stronger he becomes, the harder he becomes to contain.
Biological Mimicry
Following consumption, Viral can temporarily restructure his external biology to resemble a recently assimilated organism.
When stable, the mimicry can be extremely convincing.
This allows Viral to perform limited biological infiltration without conventional disguises.
However, the process is not perfect.
Stress, injury, excessive biomass, or instability can cause abnormalities to appear.
Possible failures include:
- Incorrect pigmentation
- Abnormal movement
- Visible biological distortion
- Symbiotic material appearing beneath the skin
- Structural inconsistencies
- Sudden partial reversion
As a result, Viral’s mimicry is most effective during short-duration infiltration.
It becomes considerably less reliable when he is placed under pressure.
Armoured Field
Viral can generate adaptive biological armor across his body.
The material forms through rapid restructuring and hardening of symbiotic tissue.
Unlike conventional armor, the Armoured Field can alter itself in response to incoming threats.
Sections may thicken around areas experiencing repeated impacts or redistribute biological material toward vulnerable regions.
At high biomass levels, the armor is capable of surviving extremely heavy punishment, including weapons normally capable of destroying conventional infantry protection.
The armor also contributes to Viral’s physical strength.
Greater armor density increases both his durability and overall mass.
However, maintaining extreme levels of protection consumes significant biological resources.
Symbiotic Blade
Viral’s left arm can form a large biological blade.
The weapon consists of hardened symbiotic material grown directly from the limb.
Its shape can shift slightly depending upon Viral’s condition and the amount of available biomass.
The blade is capable of inflicting severe damage against infantry and armored targets at close range.
Damage to the weapon does not necessarily permanently destroy it.
Provided sufficient biomass remains available, Viral can gradually regenerate the structure.
Regeneration
The organism grants Viral substantial regenerative capability.
Damage that would permanently incapacitate ordinary personnel can potentially be repaired through biological reconstruction.
The speed and effectiveness of regeneration depend heavily upon Viral’s available biomass.
Minor injuries can be repaired relatively quickly.
Severe trauma requires significantly more biological material.
Consumption can accelerate this process.
This creates another dangerous feedback loop during combat:
Viral is injured.
Viral consumes.
Viral heals.
Viral becomes stronger.
Containment becomes harder.
Adaptive Biology
The organism constantly modifies Viral’s body in response to external threats.
These adaptations are not always consciously controlled.
Repeated exposure to particular forms of damage may cause the symbiote to reinforce vulnerable tissue or alter its defensive structure.
This adaptability makes Viral increasingly difficult to fight during prolonged engagements.
The longer an opponent allows him to survive, consume, and adapt, the more dangerous he may become.
Critical Mass
Viral possesses a biological limit to the amount of assimilated material his body can safely maintain.
When this threshold is approached, the organism enters an increasingly unstable state known as Critical Mass.
Symptoms may include:
- Rapid uncontrolled growth
- Increased aggression
- Armor thickening
- Loss of fine biological control
- Uncontrolled tissue formation
- Reduced mimicry stability
- Severe physical distortion
- Increasing containment difficulty
If biomass continues accumulating beyond safe limits, Viral may initiate or involuntarily experience a Critical Mass Execution.
Critical Mass Execution
Critical Mass Execution occurs when Viral’s accumulated biomass exceeds the organism’s ability to safely maintain its current form.
The symbiote violently expels excess biological material.
This can produce an explosive release of:
- Corrosive biological matter
- Infectious material
- Symbiotic fragments
- Organic debris
- Spore-like particles
The resulting event can devastate personnel and infrastructure within the immediate area.
It also creates a significant contamination hazard.
Whether Viral consciously triggers Critical Mass Execution or merely loses the ability to prevent it may vary depending upon his condition.
Hell Host personnel are instructed to prevent Viral from reaching this state whenever possible.
Combat Role
Viral is not treated as conventional infantry.
His deployment is normally restricted to situations where the potential consequences of releasing him are outweighed by the threat already present.
His primary combat applications include:
- Biological assimilation
- Close-quarters devastation
- Infiltration through mimicry
- High-threat target elimination
- Attritional combat
- Extreme containment operations
- Last-resort deployment
Viral becomes increasingly dangerous during prolonged engagements because hostile casualties can provide additional biomass.
Enemy numbers can therefore become an advantage for him.
This also creates an obvious problem.
Once the enemy is gone, someone still has to bring Viral home.
Containment
Viral remains under strict Hell Host biological containment protocols.
His classification carries Omega-level security restrictions.
Direct contact is discouraged unless operationally necessary.
Containment procedures focus heavily upon controlling Viral’s access to biological material.
Unlike conventional prisoners or experimental assets, simply constructing a stronger cell does not completely solve the problem.
Viral’s ability to adapt means containment procedures must themselves change over time.
Medical and scientific personnel continuously monitor:
- Biomass levels
- Biological stability
- Regeneration
- Behavioral changes
- Symbiotic adaptation
- Signs of Critical Mass
- Changes in mimicry
- Neurological activity
- Viral’s degree of conscious control
Viral is not considered inherently hostile.
He is considered inherently dangerous.
There is a difference.
”The Package”
Among some Hell Host personnel, Viral is known as The Package.
The name is particularly common in operational and containment contexts.
Rather than referring to Viral by name, personnel transporting or preparing him for deployment may refer to the containment subject simply as the Package.
Examples include:
“Package secured.”
“Package in transit.”
“Package released.”
“Package retrieval authorized.”
The terminology reflects the unusual nature of Viral’s deployment.
It also has the uncomfortable effect of reducing a seventeen-year-old human being to transported military cargo.
Whether this was intentional when the nickname originated is unclear.
”Fungal Fighter”
Viral is also known as Fungal Fighter.
The nickname predates portions of his current formal containment documentation and remains in occasional use among Hell Host personnel.
Despite the name, Viral’s organism is not formally classified as a conventional fungus.
The nickname has nevertheless persisted.
Attempts to replace military nicknames with scientifically accurate terminology have historically achieved limited success.
Personality
Despite his appearance and capabilities, Viral is generally quiet and observant.
He is emotionally distant and rarely initiates unnecessary conversation.
His transformation has severely affected his sense of identity.
Viral understands that his memories remain.
He understands that he recognizes people.
He understands that he still experiences emotion.
What he does not know is whether those things prove that he is still the same person who entered the containment facility.
Periods of isolation and constant monitoring have intensified this uncertainty.
Viral is not normally hostile without provocation.
Flickers of his former personality remain visible, particularly around individuals he trusts.
These moments are important to personnel responsible for his psychological care.
They are also important to Viral.
They remind him that something of the person he once was remains inside the organism.
Assuming there is still a meaningful distinction between the two.
Relationship with Aegis
Aegis regards Viral as an unpredictable biological variable.
Viral’s constant adaptation makes long-term behavioral and combat prediction unusually difficult.
As a result, Aegis maintains strict monitoring whenever the two operate in proximity.
Viral is aware of this.
He appears largely indifferent to it.
Relationship with Centurion
Viral and Centurion possess an unusual degree of mutual understanding.
Both survived events that permanently altered their bodies and separated them from ordinary human existence.
The similarities largely end there.
Centurion emerged from the Voidlands with a degree of stability and control over his altered state.
Viral remains locked in a continuous biological struggle with his.
Neither claims to fully understand what happened to the other.
Neither particularly needs to.
Relationship with Null
Null represents a disturbing comparison for Viral.
Both individuals are bonded with adaptive substances capable of restructuring their bodies.
However, Null’s condition exists within a comparatively controlled framework.
Viral’s does not.
To Null, Viral represents what can happen when adaptation becomes instability.
To Viral, Null represents the possibility that something fundamentally inhuman can coexist with a human host without completely consuming their identity.
Their similarities make them potentially valuable to one another.
They also make both extremely cautious.
Relationship with Anvil
Anvil considers Viral useful but exceptionally dangerous.
His assessment of Viral is straightforward:
“Keep him on a leash.”
Viral has not expressed particular affection for this description.
Nevertheless, Anvil is among the personnel physically capable of remaining operational around Viral during severe containment incidents, making the two potentially valuable during high-risk deployments.
Identity
Viral’s greatest conflict is not military.
It is personal.
His original body no longer exists in any conventional sense.
Cells have been replaced.
Tissue has been rewritten.
Foreign biomass has entered and left his body.
The organism can change his appearance, rebuild his injuries, alter his structure, and incorporate material that once belonged to other living things.
Yet his memories remain.
His personality remains.
At least partially.
This leaves Viral with a question Hell Host researchers cannot answer for him.
If every part of a person can change while their memories continue…
what exactly survived?
Reputation
Among Hell Host personnel, Viral inspires a mixture of fear, sympathy, distrust, and fascination.
Some regard him as a weapon.
Some regard him as a containment failure.
Some regard him as a victim.
Others simply know him as the thing commanders deploy when the situation has already become catastrophic.
All descriptions contain some truth.
Officially, Viral remains a Hell Host operative and containment subject.
Unofficially, his reputation is considerably simpler.
If The Package is being deployed, something has already gone terribly wrong.
Unknowns
Several major questions surrounding Viral remain unresolved:
- What is Viral’s real name?
- What was the original purpose of the experiment?
- Who authorized the weaponization program?
- What exactly was the original viral strain?
- Is the current organism still biologically classifiable as a virus?
- Does the organism possess an independent consciousness?
- How much of Viral’s original biology remains?
- What are the maximum limits of Consumption?
- Can assimilated biomass permanently influence Viral?
- How accurate can his mimicry become?
- Can the organism spread independently from Viral?
- Can Viral be separated from the organism without killing him?
- What happens if Viral permanently exceeds Critical Mass?
- Is Viral becoming more stable over time, or less?
- Does Viral control the organism, or has the organism simply learned that keeping Viral in control benefits them both?
