The Living Shadow is an anomalous humanoid entity of unknown origin that has repeatedly acted in support of the Hell Hosts.
Despite appearing within Hell Host records, Living Shadow is not formally a member of the faction.
It possesses no rank.
It belongs to no military branch.
It receives no known orders.
Hell Host command cannot reliably contact, summon, deploy, track, or control it.
Living Shadow simply appears.
Its interventions have repeatedly benefited Hell Host personnel, leading the faction to recognize the entity as an allied anomaly rather than a conventional operative.
Why Living Shadow has chosen to assist the Hell Hosts remains unknown.
It has never requested payment.
It has never explained its allegiance.
When its objective is complete, it disappears.
Appearance
Living Shadow most commonly appears as a humanoid figure wearing dark segmented armor beneath a deep crimson hood and cloak.
Its face has never been reliably observed.
Beneath the hood appears to be a smooth, featureless darkness occasionally interrupted by faint reflective surfaces.
Whether this represents a helmet, biological structure, anomalous effect, or something else entirely remains unknown.
Its equipment resembles a mixture of lightweight armor and traditional combat clothing.
However, comparisons between separate encounters have identified minor inconsistencies in its appearance.
Whether Living Shadow changes equipment or simply manifests differently is uncertain.
No confirmed sample of its armor, clothing, tissue, blood, or other biological material has ever been recovered.
Living Shadow also appears to cast no conventional shadow of its own.
Alignment with the Hell Hosts
Living Shadow’s relationship with the Hell Hosts is poorly understood.
It cannot accurately be described as a soldier, operative, mercenary, or conventional ally.
The Hell Hosts possess no known authority over it.
Instead, Living Shadow appears to independently decide when intervention is necessary.
Documented appearances have occurred during:
- Compromised military operations
- Reconnaissance missions
- Infiltration operations
- Encirclements
- High-value target operations
- Anomalous incidents
- Situations involving unidentified threats
No reliable pattern explains why Living Shadow intervenes in some events while ignoring others.
Hell Host commanders are explicitly instructed never to construct an operational plan dependent upon Living Shadow appearing.
If the entity arrives, personnel may cooperate with it.
If it does not, the mission continues without it.
Attempts to deliberately summon or locate Living Shadow have consistently failed.
Encounter Protocol
Hell Host personnel encountering Living Shadow are instructed to follow several basic principles:
- Do not immediately engage.
- Do not attempt physical containment.
- Do not deliberately obstruct its movement.
- Do not assume it will follow orders.
- Do not pursue it after disappearance.
- Record all observations following the encounter.
- Report unusual environmental or electronic effects.
- Do not assume an apparently empty shadow is actually empty.
Living Shadow has not demonstrated indiscriminate hostility toward Hell Host personnel.
This does not make interaction with it safe.
Anomalous Properties
Living Shadow demonstrates several anomalous abilities involving darkness and areas of low illumination.
Early descriptions claimed the entity possessed complete control over shadows.
Modern observations suggest something considerably stranger.
Living Shadow does not appear to simply manipulate the absence of light.
Instead, it appears capable of interacting with shadows as though they possess properties that conventional physics says they should not have.
What exactly it is manipulating remains unknown.
Shadow Submergence
Living Shadow can physically disappear into sufficiently dark areas.
Observers describe the entity as sinking or collapsing into an existing shadow before vanishing from conventional observation.
It can later emerge from another area of darkness.
This ability allows Living Shadow to bypass:
- Locked entrances
- Physical barriers
- Guarded corridors
- Defensive positions
- Conventional surveillance
- Certain containment measures
The maximum distance between entry and emergence points is unknown.
Available observations suggest the ability functions more consistently over shorter distances.
Living Shadow does not appear capable of emerging from arbitrary locations without suitable darkness.
Intense overlapping illumination can therefore restrict available emergence points.
This does not necessarily prevent Living Shadow from escaping.
It simply gives it fewer places to return.
Where Living Shadow physically exists while submerged remains unknown.
Shadow Manifestation
Living Shadow can temporarily give physical properties to nearby darkness.
Observed manifestations include:
- Blade-like structures
- Tendrils
- Temporary barriers
- Restraining formations
- Dense obscuring masses
These structures appear to possess physical force despite being produced from areas that should contain no conventional material.
The ability is strongest in environments with substantial natural or artificial shadow.
Extremely bright environments appear to restrict the amount of material Living Shadow can manifest.
Living Shadow cannot simply extinguish all light around itself or create unlimited darkness.
Its abilities depend heavily upon the environment available to it.
Shadow Echoes
One of Living Shadow’s most disturbing abilities is informally known as Shadow Echoes.
The entity can apparently interact with the shadows cast by other living beings.
During these events, a person’s shadow may temporarily behave independently of the individual producing it.
Documented abnormalities include shadows:
- Moving while the subject remains still
- Turning independently of the subject
- Pointing toward objects or locations
- Distorting into anatomically impossible forms
- Moving against the direction of available light
- Continuing to move after the subject has stopped
Living Shadow appears capable of using these altered shadows for observation, distraction, intimidation, and occasionally attack.
There is no confirmed evidence that Living Shadow can directly control a person’s body simply because they are standing within darkness.
Older claims describing complete Shadow Dominion over individuals are therefore considered exaggerated or inaccurate.
The psychological effect remains considerable.
Personnel who witness their own shadow move independently frequently report severe disorientation.
Spatial Abnormalities
Living Shadow’s presence occasionally produces anomalies that cannot be explained entirely by its known abilities.
During several encounters, instruments observing areas of darkness near the entity have returned impossible spatial measurements.
Shadowed corners may briefly appear deeper than the physical dimensions of the room containing them.
Rangefinding equipment has occasionally detected distances extending beyond nearby walls.
Objects partially entering these areas can temporarily disappear from sensors despite remaining physically nearby.
These effects normally cease after Living Shadow leaves.
Whether these abnormalities represent another ability, a consequence of Shadow Submergence, or evidence of something else remains unknown.
Surveillance Difficulties
Living Shadow is exceptionally difficult to observe through conventional surveillance.
Recorded effects include:
- Missing video frames
- Sudden image corruption
- Inconsistent thermal signatures
- Delayed motion detection
- Depth-sensor errors
- Unexplained areas of darkness
- Temporary loss of tracking data
In several cases, automated systems registered Living Shadow’s movement only after the movement had already occurred.
Other recordings have shown inconsistencies between camera angles observing the same event.
These effects do not occur reliably enough to determine whether Living Shadow deliberately interferes with surveillance.
The entity itself has never explained them.
Combat Style
Living Shadow strongly favors stealth and close-range combat.
It rarely engages hostile forces directly unless necessary.
Instead, it uses darkness and confusion to isolate individuals before eliminating them.
Typical observed tactics include:
- Infiltration through Shadow Submergence
- Ambush
- Silent elimination
- Reconnaissance
- Psychological intimidation
- Environmental manipulation
- Target isolation
- Rapid disappearance after engagement
Living Shadow rarely remains in open combat for extended periods.
When confronted by overwhelming firepower, it typically disappears rather than attempting to overpower the threat directly.
This makes the entity extraordinarily difficult to kill but prevents it from functioning as an unstoppable conventional battlefield weapon.
Primary Weapon
Living Shadow carries an unidentified bladed weapon resembling a traditional Japanese sword.
The weapon appears ancient in design but does not correspond cleanly with any known Hell Host manufacturing standard.
Attempts to identify its material composition through remote scanning have produced inconsistent results.
No sample of the weapon has ever been recovered.
Living Shadow demonstrates exceptional proficiency with the blade and appears to prefer it over ranged weaponry.
Whether the weapon possesses anomalous properties of its own remains uncertain.
Living Shadow has occasionally been observed using other compact bladed or thrown weapons, but the unidentified sword remains its primary weapon.
Firearms
Living Shadow rarely uses firearms.
This does not appear to result from an inability to understand them.
During one documented interaction, the entity was offered a conventional firearm by allied personnel.
Living Shadow examined the weapon before returning it.
Its explanation was brief.
“Too loud.”
No further justification was provided.
Personality
Very little is known about Living Shadow’s personality.
The entity is quiet, unreadable, and highly purposeful.
It rarely speaks unless communication is necessary.
When it does speak, its statements are typically short and direct.
Living Shadow displays little obvious emotion.
Whether this represents genuine emotional absence, extreme discipline, or simply difficulty interpreting the entity is unknown.
It does not appear interested in casual conversation.
It does not respond consistently to humor, intimidation, authority, or provocation.
Despite this apparent detachment, Living Shadow repeatedly acts in ways that protect Hell Host personnel.
This suggests that it possesses motives, loyalties, or principles of some kind.
What those principles are remains unclear.
“I am not your weapon.”
Relationship with Aegis
Aegis has repeatedly attempted to model Living Shadow’s behavior.
Results have been poor.
Living Shadow does not behave randomly, but its decision-making lacks enough observable information for Aegis to reliably predict its actions.
Movement prediction becomes particularly unreliable when Shadow Submergence is involved.
Aegis therefore classifies Living Shadow as an anomalous variable that cannot be incorporated into conventional tactical forecasting.
Living Shadow has shown no apparent concern regarding this classification.
Relationship with Centurion
Centurion and Living Shadow display an unusual awareness of one another.
Neither appears immediately hostile.
Their interactions are typically brief and contain little explanation.
Centurion has not claimed to understand Living Shadow’s nature.
Living Shadow has similarly offered no explanation for its apparent recognition of Centurion.
Whether their respective anomalous conditions allow them to perceive something about one another that ordinary personnel cannot remains unknown.
Relationship with Null
Null experiences irregularities in the behavior of his adaptive material when Living Shadow is nearby.
These effects are minor but measurable.
His material may shift without conscious instruction or briefly react toward areas of darkness occupied by the entity.
No harmful interaction has been confirmed.
Living Shadow appears aware of Null’s condition but has shown little interest in discussing it.
Relationship with Viral
Living Shadow has encountered Viral on multiple occasions.
It observes him cautiously but has not demonstrated overt hostility.
Viral’s organism appears capable of detecting Living Shadow’s presence before conventional sensors in some circumstances.
Whether it detects Living Shadow itself or merely reacts to environmental changes associated with the entity remains unknown.
Living Shadow has never attempted to attack or assimilate with Viral.
Viral has likewise shown little interest in testing what would happen.
Hell Host researchers strongly support this mutual restraint.
Hell Host Classification
Living Shadow remains one of the unusual cases in which the Hell Hosts formally document an entity they neither employ nor control.
Its Omega-level file exists primarily so that personnel encountering it understand one critical fact:
Living Shadow is currently considered an ally.
Currently.
The distinction is intentional.
Hell Host command has no guarantee that the entity’s objectives will always align with its own.
As a result, Living Shadow is simultaneously treated as:
- An allied entity
- A potential intelligence source
- An anomalous phenomenon
- An extreme security risk
- A possible strategic threat
No attempt has been made to formally recruit it.
Previous experience suggests the distinction would mean very little to Living Shadow anyway.
Reputation
Most Hell Host personnel never encounter Living Shadow.
Among those who do, stories vary considerably.
Some describe an unseen assassin eliminating enemy personnel from the darkness.
Others report seeing the entity standing silently at the edge of an operation before disappearing.
Some claim Living Shadow saved their lives.
Others are unsure whether it even noticed them.
This uncertainty has produced numerous rumors surrounding the entity.
Some soldiers believe Living Shadow follows specific individuals.
Others believe it appears before catastrophic events.
A small number claim seeing it is an omen.
None of these theories have been confirmed.
One fact is generally accepted:
If Living Shadow is standing in the room, it probably has a reason.
Unknowns
Almost everything concerning Living Shadow remains unresolved:
