Elysarians

Classification: Sapient biological species
Origin: Elysarian Dominion
Primary Region: The Elysarian Dominion
Distribution: Primarily the Elysarian Dominion; smaller populations throughout the Omicron Galaxy
Status: Extant

Elysarians are an ancient sapient humanoid species native to the region now controlled by The Elysarian Dominion.

Physically, Elysarians closely resemble humans. Their most immediately recognisable characteristic is their long, pointed ears, although several less obvious differences exist within their internal biology and natural lifespan.

Elysarian civilisation is considerably older than many of the modern powers operating throughout the Omicron Galaxy. Their history stretches across numerous periods of expansion, conflict, political change, technological advancement, and cultural development.

Despite their close association with the Elysarian Dominion, Elysarians are a species rather than a political group. Elysarians can live outside Dominion territory and may hold entirely different political loyalties.

Appearance

Elysarians possess a humanoid body structure extremely similar to that of Humans.

At a distance, an Elysarian can easily be mistaken for a human.

Their most recognisable physical feature is their ears, which are considerably longer than human ears and taper into distinctive points.

Ear shape and length vary naturally between individuals.

Elysarians otherwise display extensive physical diversity. Skin tone, hair colour, eye colour, height, facial structure, and body type vary between individuals and populations.

Unlike species such as Glacians and Ashens, Elysarians do not possess a single unusual skin colour or obvious environmental adaptation that immediately identifies them.

In many cases, the ears are the only feature required to distinguish an Elysarian from a human through ordinary observation.

Biology

Despite their external similarity, Elysarians are biologically distinct from humans.

Their internal anatomy follows a broadly comparable structure, although differences exist within their cellular biology, metabolism, nervous system, immune response, and ageing process.

The similarity between Elysarians and humans has been the subject of considerable scientific interest.

Whether the resemblance is entirely coincidental, the result of distant biological ancestry, or connected to wider patterns of humanoid evolution throughout the galaxy remains debated.

Lifespan

Elysarians naturally live considerably longer than humans.

Their cells deteriorate more slowly and possess highly effective mechanisms for repairing certain forms of biological damage.

As a result, Elysarians remain physically healthy for a significant portion of their lives and experience ageing more gradually than humans.

Modern medicine has extended these lifespans further.

Their long lives have significantly influenced Elysarian culture, politics, education, relationships, and perceptions of history.

Events considered ancient history by shorter-lived species may have occurred within the lifetime of an elderly Elysarian.

Ageing

Elysarians mature at a rate broadly comparable to humans during the earliest stages of life before their ageing process gradually slows.

Adult Elysarians can retain relatively youthful appearances for long periods.

Determining an Elysarian’s age through appearance alone can therefore be extremely unreliable.

An individual who appears relatively young by human standards may possess decades or even centuries of experience.

Senses

Elysarian hearing is more sensitive than that of humans.

Their elongated ears assist in detecting and locating subtle variations in sound, although the difference is not extreme enough to constitute an entirely different form of perception.

Elysarians can often distinguish quieter or more distant sounds than humans under comparable conditions.

Extremely loud environments can consequently be more uncomfortable for them.

Their other major senses remain broadly comparable to those of humans.

The Elysarian Dominion

The Elysarian Dominion is the largest and most historically significant civilisation associated with the Elysarian species.

The Dominion predates many contemporary interstellar powers and possesses an extensive cultural and political history.

Its age has allowed Elysarian civilisation to accumulate enormous quantities of historical records, traditions, architecture, technology, knowledge, and cultural heritage.

Many settlements within Dominion territory have existed in some form for extremely long periods.

This history contributes heavily to the Dominion’s modern identity.

Society

Elysarian society is not culturally uniform.

Different worlds and populations possess their own customs, languages, traditions, political beliefs, religions, architecture, clothing, and social structures.

However, the longevity of both Elysarian individuals and their civilisation has created a strong relationship with history.

Historical events are often treated less abstractly within Elysarian communities than among shorter-lived species.

Family histories can span enormous periods while containing relatively few generations.

Objects, buildings, institutions, and traditions may remain personally connected to living individuals long after another species would consider them ancient.

Education

Long Elysarian lifespans allow individuals to spend substantial periods developing specialised skills.

An Elysarian may pursue several completely different professions during their lifetime or dedicate decades to mastering a single discipline.

Education therefore does not necessarily end during early adulthood.

Returning to formal study after decades in another profession is considered entirely ordinary within many Elysarian societies.

Technology

Elysarian civilisation possesses highly advanced technology developed across an extensive history.

Elysarian engineering frequently combines functionality with considerable attention to appearance, durability, and long-term use.

Technology designed to remain operational for generations is common within Dominion territory.

Older Elysarian technologies can remain in service long after their original creators have died.

This does not mean every Elysarian technology is superior to technology developed by younger civilisations.

Different societies throughout the Omicron Galaxy have specialised in different fields, and technological exchange between species is widespread.

Architecture

Elysarian architecture varies dramatically between worlds and historical periods.

Many older settlements contain structures that have survived for centuries or longer through continuous maintenance, restoration, and modification.

Rather than routinely demolishing old structures, some Elysarian cultures incorporate them into newer cities.

As a result, a single settlement may contain architecture originating from numerous periods of Elysarian history.

Relations with Other Species

Elysarians have interacted with numerous intelligent species throughout their history.

Modern Elysarian communities can include Humans, Androids, Glacians, Ashens, and other inhabitants of the Omicron Galaxy.

Their long lifespan can occasionally create cultural differences when interacting with shorter-lived species.

An Elysarian may approach political decisions, careers, relationships, or long-term projects on timescales that seem unusually long to humans.

Conversely, some Elysarians regard shorter-lived species as unusually fast-moving and willing to make dramatic changes within relatively short periods.

These differences do not prevent close relationships between species.

Elysarians Outside the Dominion

Not every Elysarian lives within or supports the Elysarian Dominion.

Migration, political disagreement, employment, exploration, trade, relationships, military service, and countless other circumstances have produced Elysarian communities throughout the galaxy.

Some have lived outside Dominion territory for generations.

Others maintain strong connections to their ancestral civilisation despite residing elsewhere.

Elysarians may serve within foreign governments, military organisations, corporations, research institutions, independent groups, or mixed-species communities.

Identity

Elysarian identity can refer to species, ancestry, culture, or some combination of the three.

An Elysarian born within the Core Systems may have little personal connection to Dominion society.

Likewise, a non-Elysarian raised within the Dominion may identify strongly with its culture.

The Elysarian species and the Elysarian Dominion are therefore closely connected historically, but they are not interchangeable.
