Androids
Classification: Artificial sapient beings
Origin: Artificially created
Distribution: Widespread throughout the Omicron Galaxy
Common Forms: Human, Elysarian, Ashen, Glacian and other humanoid species
Status: Extant
Androids are artificial beings constructed to physically resemble biological species.
Unlike conventional robots, android bodies are specifically designed to imitate organic life. Modern androids can replicate facial structure, skin, hair, eyes, body temperature, movement, speech, breathing patterns, and numerous other biological characteristics with extreme accuracy.
Human-form androids are by far the most common throughout the Omicron Galaxy, although androids resembling several other humanoid species also exist.
Advanced models can be extremely difficult to distinguish from the species they were designed to resemble.
The term android primarily describes the nature of the artificial body rather than the intelligence controlling it.
Appearance
Androids can be constructed with almost any humanoid appearance.
Modern synthetic skin can reproduce pores, scars, fingerprints, wrinkles, pigmentation, body hair, and other small characteristics normally associated with biological organisms.
Eyes, teeth, nails, hair, and other visible features can similarly be replicated.
Many android bodies also imitate unconscious biological behaviours.
They may breathe despite having no conventional biological requirement to do so, blink naturally, shift their weight while standing, display subtle facial movements, maintain realistic body temperature, and reproduce other behaviours that prevent them from appearing unnatural during ordinary interaction.
As a result, visual identification alone is considered unreliable.
Internal Structure
Beneath their organic appearance, androids contain artificial internal structures.
These vary considerably between manufacturers, models, intended purposes, and technological generations.
Internal systems may include artificial skeletal structures, synthetic musculature, power systems, processors, cooling systems, sensory equipment, data storage, and other mechanical or synthetic components.
Some advanced androids incorporate artificial organs or structures designed specifically to imitate biological anatomy.
Others make little attempt to replicate internal biology beyond what is necessary to maintain their external appearance.
Medical imaging such as X-rays can usually reveal an android’s artificial construction.
More sophisticated models may require specialised scanning equipment.
Intelligence
Not every android possesses the same level of intelligence.
Some android bodies are controlled by relatively limited artificial intelligence designed for specific tasks.
Others contain highly advanced artificial minds capable of independent thought, emotional development, creativity, personal relationships, long-term decision making, and individual identity.
Consequently, the terms android and artificial intelligence are not interchangeable.
An artificial intelligence does not require an android body.
Likewise, an android body does not necessarily contain a fully sapient artificial intelligence.
Androids and Robots
Androids are often incorrectly grouped together with conventional robots.
The primary distinction is physical design.
A robot may possess any form appropriate to its intended function and makes no requirement to resemble biological life.
An android is specifically constructed to resemble a biological species.
OD-139 “Enigma”, for example, is primarily classified as an autonomous robotic machine containing an advanced artificial intelligence. Although he may occasionally be described informally as an android, his body was designed primarily for mechanical and combat functionality rather than biological imitation.
The distinction does not indicate intelligence.
A conventional robot may possess a considerably more sophisticated mind than an android.
Identification
Determining whether an individual is an android can be surprisingly difficult without specialised equipment.
Common identification methods include:
- Medical imaging
- Internal structural scans
- Artificial component detection
- Analysis of certain biological readings
- Manufacturer identification systems
- Detailed medical examination
Physical injury may also expose synthetic internal structures, although advanced androids can possess artificial blood and tissue-like materials that make even this unreliable at first glance.
Detection becomes considerably more difficult when an android has been deliberately designed to conceal its artificial nature.
Physical Capabilities
Android capabilities vary enormously.
Civilian models may possess strength, speed, and durability deliberately restricted to approximately match the biological species they resemble.
Industrial or military androids can possess considerably greater physical capabilities.
Because their bodies are artificial, androids can potentially survive injuries that would be immediately fatal to biological organisms.
However, they remain vulnerable to structural damage, power failure, processor damage, extreme temperatures, electromagnetic effects, specialised weapons, and destruction of critical internal systems.
An android that appears human should therefore not automatically be assumed to possess superhuman abilities.
Sensation
Advanced android bodies can contain extensive sensory networks capable of reproducing touch, temperature, pressure, pain, balance, smell, taste, and other sensations.
The complexity of these systems differs between models.
Pain simulation is particularly controversial.
Supporters argue that pain allows androids to recognise physical damage and protect their bodies in much the same way biological organisms do.
Critics have questioned the ethics of deliberately creating artificial beings capable of suffering.
For sapient androids, the distinction between simulated sensation and genuine experience remains heavily debated.
Identity
Android identity is a complicated subject throughout the Omicron Galaxy.
Some androids openly identify themselves as synthetic.
Others consider their artificial nature relatively unimportant to their identity.
Some adopt the cultural identity of the species whose appearance they possess, while others develop distinctly synthetic identities and communities.
An android constructed to resemble a human is not biologically human.
Whether that android considers themselves culturally human is another matter entirely.
Society
Androids do not possess a single unified civilisation.
They exist throughout numerous societies, factions, corporations, colonies, and independent communities.
Androids may work as scientists, engineers, soldiers, pilots, doctors, labourers, diplomats, entertainers, explorers, security personnel, or in virtually any other profession.
Some live openly among biological populations.
Others form communities primarily inhabited by artificial beings.
The treatment of androids varies significantly between worlds.
Legal Status
The legal status of androids differs throughout the Omicron Galaxy.
Some governments recognise sufficiently advanced androids as independent persons with rights comparable to biological citizens.
Others distinguish between sapient and non-sapient artificial beings.
Certain jurisdictions continue to treat some androids primarily as manufactured property.
These differences have caused considerable political and ethical conflict throughout galactic history.
Questions surrounding artificial personhood become particularly complicated when an android demonstrates emotion, independent thought, fear, loyalty, personal ambition, or a desire for self-determination.
Memory
Android memory differs fundamentally from biological memory.
Experiences may be stored digitally or through more advanced artificial neural systems depending on the design of the individual.
This does not necessarily produce perfect recall.
Advanced artificial minds may forget information, suppress memories, develop corrupted memories, or reconstruct past experiences in ways surprisingly similar to biological intelligence.
Memory modification, copying, deletion, and transfer remain particularly controversial areas of artificial intelligence research.
The possibility of copying an artificial mind also raises difficult questions regarding identity.
If two identical copies of the same mind are activated independently, it is unclear at what point they should be considered separate individuals.
Maintenance
Androids require maintenance rather than conventional biological healthcare, although the distinction has become increasingly blurred as synthetic bodies become more sophisticated.
Damaged artificial tissue can be replaced.
Mechanical components can be repaired.
Internal systems can be upgraded.
Software can be modified.
However, extensive damage to the systems containing an android’s consciousness can result in irreversible death.
Replacing a body is not necessarily equivalent to restoring the individual if the mind itself has been destroyed.
Military Use
Androids have been used extensively in military operations.
Their potential advantages include increased durability, resistance to some environmental hazards, reduced biological requirements, rapid information processing, and compatibility with specialised equipment.
Military androids may also be designed to infiltrate biological populations by appearing indistinguishable from ordinary civilians or soldiers.
The use of androids for covert infiltration has resulted in strict detection procedures within some high-security facilities.
Culture
Android culture varies enormously depending upon origin and environment.
Some adopt names and traditions associated with biological societies.
Others maintain model designations or choose entirely new identities.
Sapient androids have produced their own art, humour, philosophy, communities, relationships, and traditions.
Their artificial origin does not prevent cultural development.
If anything, the question of what it means to be artificial has become one of the defining themes within many android communities.
Relationship with Biological Species
Relationships between androids and biological species range from complete acceptance to distrust.
In many parts of the Omicron Galaxy, androids have lived alongside biological populations for generations and attract little unusual attention.
Elsewhere, fears surrounding artificial intelligence, infiltration, employment, military applications, or synthetic reproduction have produced significant tension.
Because advanced androids can be nearly indistinguishable from biological individuals, debates concerning mandatory identification remain particularly controversial.
For many androids, being asked to prove that they are artificial is considered deeply intrusive.
Reproduction and Creation
Androids do not reproduce biologically.
New android bodies are manufactured.
The creation of a new body, however, does not necessarily determine how the mind occupying it was created.
An android may contain a newly developed artificial intelligence, a copied intelligence, an existing intelligence transferred from another platform, or other forms of synthetic consciousness.
Because of this, the manufacture of an android body and the creation of an android individual are not always the same event.
