The Warden

Real Name: Unknown
Title: Veil Warden
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Age: Unknown
Faction: Obsidian Veil
Position: Second-in-Command
Role: Military Commander / Operational Authority
Status: Active

The Veil Warden, more commonly known simply as The Warden, is the second-in-command and principal military commander of the Obsidian Veil.

Second only to The Founder within the organisation’s formal command structure, Warden possesses authority over Obsidian Veil military deployments and the armed personnel responsible for enforcing its objectives across known space.

Despite his position, even Warden has never physically met the Founder.

Their interactions have occurred entirely through remote communication.

Warden does not appear troubled by this arrangement.

“The Founder gives commands. Veyra computes them. I make them real.”

— Veil Warden

Appearance

Warden’s appearance is dominated by the black military equipment characteristic of Obsidian Veil forces.

He wears heavy black combat armour beneath a long command coat and an enclosed respirator helmet.

The helmet contains two prominent red optical lenses and completely obscures his face while deployed.

His armour bears the insignia of the Obsidian Veil, while an identification patch worn on his left arm marks his command authority.

Unlike the deliberately ceremonial appearance of some military leaders, Warden’s equipment remains fundamentally practical.

He dresses like a soldier because he remains one.

Personality

Warden is calm, controlled, and exceptionally difficult to intimidate.

He rarely raises his voice.

Orders are generally delivered with the same measured tone regardless of whether he is authorising a deployment, addressing subordinate personnel, or personally engaging an enemy.

Warden has little interest in theatrical displays of authority.

He expects instructions to be followed because the personnel beneath him understand what happens if they are not.

His calm demeanour should not be mistaken for compassion.

When Warden determines that force is necessary, he applies it with clinical precision.

He does not need to hate an opponent to destroy them.

They simply need to be standing between the Obsidian Veil and its objective.

Obsidian Veil

Warden is one of the most powerful individuals within the Obsidian Veil.

Where much of the organisation is concerned with research, intelligence, anomalous phenomena, classified information, and long-term strategic objectives, Warden is responsible for the practical application of military force.

When an Obsidian Veil objective requires soldiers, Warden provides them.

When a research site must be secured, Warden secures it.

When an expedition requires protection, Warden establishes it.

When something dangerous escapes containment, Warden responds.

And when resistance threatens an operation, Warden ends it.

His responsibilities have placed him at the centre of numerous Obsidian Veil military deployments.

Command Structure

The exact relationship between The Founder, Veyra, and Warden is unusual.

The Founder remains the highest authority within the organisation.

Warden formally serves as second-in-command.

However, operational decisions can also place Warden beneath Veyra’s authority.

This arrangement does not represent a conventional military hierarchy.

Veyra’s role within the organisation grants her authority over aspects of Obsidian Veil operations that can supersede Warden’s normal command privileges.

Warden appears to accept this arrangement without significant objection.

He has summarised the relationship himself:

“The Founder gives commands. Veyra computes them. I make them real.”

The Founder

Despite being the second-highest-ranking member of the Obsidian Veil, Warden has never encountered The Founder in person.

He knows the Founder’s face.

He knows his voice.

He has communicated with him directly.

He has received orders from him.

He has never occupied the same physical space as him.

This makes Warden particularly important to speculation surrounding the Founder’s existence.

If the second-in-command of the organisation has never met its leader, it is unclear whether anyone has.

Warden rarely entertains questions concerning the matter.

As far as he is concerned, the Founder gives legitimate commands.

That is sufficient.

Veyra

Veyra occupies an unusual position within the Obsidian Veil hierarchy.

Although Warden is formally second-in-command, Veyra possesses operational authority capable of superseding his own under certain circumstances.

Warden does not appear to view this as a challenge to his position.

Their roles are fundamentally different.

Veyra determines, processes, or interprets aspects of the organisation’s objectives.

Warden turns those objectives into action.

The relationship between the two is therefore less a conventional superior-subordinate structure and more a division between decision and execution.

Military Authority

Warden commands Obsidian Veil military deployments across known space.

His authority includes conventional security forces, specialised combat units, facility defence personnel, and forces assigned to classified expeditions or anomalous operations.

He is not merely an administrator.

Warden frequently participates directly in operations when he determines that his presence is necessary.

His arrival on a battlefield therefore carries considerable significance.

If Warden has personally deployed, the Obsidian Veil considers the situation important.

Command Style

Warden favours controlled and deliberate military action.

He does not waste personnel merely to demonstrate power.

Every deployment is expected to achieve an objective.

Every resource committed to an operation should have a purpose.

This philosophy extends to his treatment of resistance.

Warden does not pursue violence for entertainment.

However, once an opposing force becomes an obstacle to an Obsidian Veil objective, he shows little hesitation in removing it.

His reputation for clinical precision originates from this behaviour.

There is rarely anger behind Warden’s violence.

Only intent.

Combat

Warden is an experienced combatant despite his senior position.

He is comfortable commanding from the field and possesses extensive familiarity with Obsidian Veil weapons, armour, and operational doctrine.

His fighting style reflects his personality.

Controlled.

Efficient.

Deliberate.

Warden avoids unnecessary movement and rarely takes risks without an operational reason.

He does not fight to impress observers.

He fights to finish the objective.

Obsidian Armour

Warden wears a heavily reinforced variant of standard Obsidian Veil combat armour.

The armour provides protection against ballistic weapons, environmental hazards, and various threats encountered during classified operations.

Its systems include integrated communications, battlefield monitoring, environmental filtration, and enhanced optical equipment.

A full respirator helmet protects Warden’s head and face.

Its distinctive red optical lenses have become closely associated with both Warden and Obsidian Veil military personnel.

Command Coat

Warden frequently wears a long black coat over portions of his combat equipment.

The garment serves as a visible indication of command authority while retaining compatibility with his armour and field equipment.

Unlike purely ceremonial uniforms, Warden’s command attire is designed to remain functional during active deployments.

Standard-Issue Rifle

Warden carries a variant of the standard rifle used by Obsidian Veil military forces.

Although he has access to more specialised equipment, he frequently uses conventional faction weaponry.

This reflects his broader attitude toward combat.

Warden has little interest in carrying exotic weapons solely as symbols of rank.

If the standard weapon performs the required task, it is sufficient.

Reputation

Within the Obsidian Veil, Warden represents the organisation’s military authority.

Scientists may understand an anomaly.

Analysts may determine its significance.

The Founder may decide what must be done about it.

Warden is the individual responsible for ensuring that decision survives contact with reality.

His presence during an operation is therefore rarely considered reassuring by those opposing the Obsidian Veil.

Among some personnel, a simple understanding has developed:

If Warden arrives personally, the situation has already escalated beyond routine containment.

Identity

Warden’s real identity is not publicly documented.

Whether Warden is a title, codename, or identity adopted permanently after joining the Obsidian Veil remains unclear.

His face is similarly rarely exposed outside secure environments.

Unlike the mystery surrounding the Founder, however, there is no serious doubt that Warden physically exists.

Numerous personnel have fought beside him.

Others have met him directly.

Many have received orders from him in person.

Warden is very real.

Philosophy

Warden appears deeply committed to the objectives of the Obsidian Veil.

However, his loyalty is expressed through action rather than ideology.

He does not need to deliver speeches about the organisation’s purpose.

His responsibility is considerably simpler.

An objective is established.

A plan is developed.

Warden executes it.

The Founder gives commands.

Veyra computes them.

Warden makes them real.
