Eden

Eden is an ancient, exceptionally biodiverse planet located near the centre of The Eden Reach. The world is regarded as one of the most biologically significant locations in the Omicron Galaxy and has become the centre of centuries of scientific research, religious interpretation, conspiracy theories, and unexplained incidents.

Although famous for its extraordinary natural beauty, Eden is perhaps better known within scientific circles for a mystery that remains unresolved: the possibility that much of the life throughout the Eden Reach originated from the planet.

No accepted explanation for this phenomenon currently exists.

Overview

Eden possesses an extraordinarily complex biosphere containing millions of documented species and potentially millions more awaiting classification.

Vast forests cover much of its landmass, while enormous oceans, wetlands, mountain ecosystems, cave networks, and subterranean environments support their own distinct forms of life.

Some organisms found on Eden possess biological characteristics similar to species discovered on worlds located across the Eden Reach.

Initially dismissed as coincidence or the result of ancient interplanetary contamination, continued discoveries eventually led researchers to consider a far more controversial possibility:

Eden may somehow be connected to the development of life throughout the entire region.

Age

Determining the age of Eden’s biosphere has proven extremely difficult.

Some geological evidence suggests that complex biological processes may have existed on the planet extraordinarily early in its history. Several discoveries have produced dates considered controversial or incompatible with conventional models of planetary development.

These findings remain heavily disputed.

Ancient fossil structures recovered from deep beneath Eden’s surface have occasionally demonstrated characteristics resembling biological structures found on other worlds throughout the Reach.

Whether these similarities represent common ancestry, convergent evolution, ancient artificial intervention, or another unknown process remains unresolved.

The Eden Hypothesis

The Eden Hypothesis is a controversial scientific theory proposing that many of the ecosystems found throughout The Eden Reach ultimately descend from biological material originating on Eden.

Supporters of the hypothesis point toward recurring genetic structures, unusual biochemical similarities, and fossil evidence discovered across otherwise unrelated planetary systems.

How biological material could have travelled between these worlds remains unknown.

Several competing explanations have been proposed, including ancient panspermia, intervention by an unknown civilisation, naturally occurring interstellar biological transfer, and an unidentified mechanism unique to Eden itself.

None have been conclusively demonstrated.

Edenic Propagation

A more controversial extension of the Eden Hypothesis proposes that the spread of Eden-derived biology may not be accidental.

Known informally as Edenic Propagation, the theory suggests that organisms originating from Eden possess an unusual ability to establish themselves within foreign ecosystems.

Once introduced, Eden-derived organisms can adapt rapidly to local conditions and eventually become integrated into the surrounding biosphere.

In most documented cases, this process does not cause ecological collapse. Instead, the introduced biology gradually becomes part of the existing ecosystem.

Because of this behaviour, some researchers have compared Edenic Propagation to a form of parasitism.

The comparison remains controversial.

The identity of the supposed “host” is itself unclear.

Subsurface Anomalies

Deep geological surveys of Eden have identified unusual structures beneath portions of the planet’s crust.

Some appear similar to enormous interconnected root systems despite existing at depths and temperatures where conventional biological activity should be impossible.

The full extent of these structures has never been publicly determined.

Several scientific expeditions have attempted to investigate them.

No expedition is known to have reached their deepest extent.

The theory that these structures form part of a single planetary-scale organism remains highly speculative and is rejected by many researchers.

No direct evidence confirming the existence of such an organism has ever been publicly produced.

The First Garden

Ancient traditions among both the Sylvans and Pelagians contain stories describing a connection between the living worlds of the Eden Reach.

One recurring concept, translated into several modern languages as The First Garden, describes life throughout the Reach as originating from a single ancestral source.

Other traditions describe worlds as branches, children, seeds, or extensions of something considerably older.

For much of recorded history, these accounts were interpreted primarily as creation mythology.

Modern discoveries concerning the possible biological relationship between Eden worlds have resulted in renewed academic interest in these traditions.

Neither Sylvan nor Pelagian accounts provide a definitive explanation for Eden.

Restricted Zones

Large areas of Eden are legally protected due to the extreme ecological sensitivity of the planet.

Settlement is heavily restricted, and numerous environments prohibit civilian access entirely.

Officially, these measures exist to prevent contamination, ecological damage, illegal biological harvesting, and the introduction of invasive species.

Several restricted zones also overlap with known subsurface anomalies.

This has contributed heavily to conspiracy theories surrounding the planet.

Obsidian Veil

Obsidian Veil has repeatedly been alleged to operate covert research facilities on or near Eden.

No complete record of their activities has ever become publicly available.

Recovered documents, witness testimony, and unexplained disappearances have led some investigators to believe that Obsidian Veil has studied Eden for decades, potentially longer.

Their objective remains unknown.

Contrary to popular conspiracy theories, there is no evidence that Obsidian Veil understands the true nature of Eden.

Some leaked material has instead suggested that their continued presence may be motivated by the same question confronting everyone else:

What is Eden?

Beyond the Eden Reach

Trace biological markers associated with Eden-derived organisms have occasionally been reported outside The Eden Reach.

Many cases have mundane explanations. Trade, agriculture, medicine, colonisation, scientific research, and civilian travel have transported organisms originating from the Reach throughout the galaxy for centuries.

However, a small number of reported discoveries cannot easily be traced to known transportation routes.

Whether these represent incomplete historical records, undiscovered natural processes, or evidence supporting Edenic Propagation remains unknown.

Rumours

Numerous rumours surround Eden, including claims of vanished expeditions, impossible geological formations, unidentified signals beneath the planetary crust, and organisms appearing in locations where they were never introduced.

One persistent story claims that deep geological monitoring equipment detected coordinated electrical activity moving through Eden’s subterranean structures.

Another claims that samples removed from the deepest accessible regions continued developing after being isolated from every known environmental stimulus.

Neither account has been verified.

Scientific Importance

Despite the controversy surrounding the planet, Eden has contributed enormously to biological science.

Research involving Eden organisms has influenced medicine, agriculture, genetic engineering, ecology, xenobiology, and planetary restoration throughout the Omicron Galaxy.

Numerous treatments and technologies derived from Eden Reach biology have saved millions of lives.

For this reason, Eden remains simultaneously regarded as one of the galaxy’s greatest natural treasures and one of its greatest biological mysteries.

Unknown

Whether Eden deliberately spreads life is unknown.

Whether the subterranean structures are biological is unknown.

Whether the similarities between distant ecosystems indicate common ancestry is unknown.

Whether Eden is itself alive is unknown.

And if Edenic Propagation is real, nobody knows what constitutes its host.
