Bastion

“We hold. Others survive because we do.”

Overview

Ryan Rhenford, known by the callsign Bastion, is a Hell Host General, veteran commander, and one of the most decorated officers serving within the Doom Corps.

A member of House Rhenford, Ryan rejected the privileges associated with his family and entered military service through conventional enlistment.

Over more than two decades of warfare, he rose through the ranks of the 9th Expeditionary Corps, becoming known for stabilizing collapsing fronts, reorganizing shattered formations, and turning situations considered unsalvageable into defensible positions.

Bastion is not famous for dramatic personal victories.

He is famous because armies under his command continue functioning when they should have already collapsed.

Where Bastion stands, the line tends to hold.

Where Bastion commands, wars tend to change direction.

Quick Facts

Appearance

Ryan is a heavily built human male showing the physical effects of decades of military service.

He has dark hair streaked with grey, a thick beard, and several visible scars across his face.

Bastion commonly wears a long black command coat over reinforced Hell Host armour.

His uniform carries numerous decorations earned throughout his career, though Ryan himself rarely draws attention to them.

Unlike officers who remain permanently behind tactical displays, Bastion’s equipment is designed for field command.

He has spent enough of his career near active fighting that he refuses to wear anything incapable of surviving it.

Personality

Bastion is calm, disciplined, intelligent, and extraordinarily difficult to unsettle.

Even during catastrophic battlefield conditions, he rarely raises his voice or allows panic to influence his decisions.

Ryan can appear cold when making strategic choices.

He is not emotionally indifferent.

His decisions are often severe precisely because he understands what hesitation can cost.

Bastion places enormous value on the personnel under his command.

He believes officers exist to spend resources responsibly, and soldiers are not resources to be thrown away for reputation.

He remembers names.

He remembers units.

He remembers casualties.

Ryan has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to place himself in danger before ordering personnel into circumstances he considers unnecessarily lethal.

His relationship with military politics is considerably less enthusiastic.

House Rhenford

Ryan was born into House Rhenford, an established family with its own history and influence within Hell Host society.

Rather than using the advantages available through his name, Ryan deliberately enlisted through ordinary military channels.

He wanted his career to belong to him.

This decision eventually became an important part of his reputation.

By the time Bastion reached senior command, nobody seriously attributed his position to family influence.

His record was far too extensive.

Another known member of House Rhenford is Kira Rhenford, though the exact relationship between the two remains undocumented.

Early Military Career

Ryan entered military service as a conventional soldier rather than an officer granted immediate command through status.

His early career was aggressive.

Before becoming known as Bastion, Ryan developed a reputation as a highly effective frontline combatant willing to attack positions that other units struggled to penetrate.

He later described this period of his life simply:

“Before I was a commander, I was the fire that broke what couldn’t be bent.”

This experience heavily influenced his later command philosophy.

Ryan understands what orders feel like from the other side.

He spent years receiving them.

The 9th Expeditionary Corps

Bastion spent the majority of his career within the 9th Expeditionary Corps.

The 9th is an elite multi-theatre formation specializing in:

  • Large-scale expeditionary warfare
  • Planetary stabilization
  • Strategic reinforcement
  • Defensive recovery
  • Combined-arms operations
  • Multi-sector deployments
  • Long-duration campaigns

Ryan served within the Corps for more than two decades.

His experience eventually became inseparable from the identity of the unit itself.

Rise Through Command

Ryan’s advancement through the military was gradual and heavily performance-driven.

His strengths became increasingly apparent as his responsibilities expanded.

He demonstrated particular skill in:

  • Combined-arms warfare
  • Logistics
  • Battlefield stabilization
  • Defensive strategy
  • Force reorganization
  • Personnel morale
  • Large-scale coordination

Bastion became especially valuable during losing battles.

He possesses an unusual ability to look at a fragmented battlefield and determine what can still be saved.

Which units can move.

Which positions must be abandoned.

Which supply routes must remain open.

Where reinforcements will actually matter.

And where the enemy is about to overextend.

This ability eventually pushed him into senior command.

The Fall of Veylor

One of the defining events of Bastion’s career was the Fall of Veylor.

The exact circumstances surrounding Veylor remain to be expanded, but the campaign resulted in severe Hell Host losses and widespread instability along the eastern front.

Ryan assumed General-level command following the disaster.

The situation he inherited was close to collapse.

Units were scattered.

Defensive lines had failed.

Supply networks were under pressure.

Morale was deteriorating.

Bastion reorganized the surviving formations and established a new defensive structure across the theatre.

The eastern front stabilized.

Total collapse was prevented.

The campaign transformed Ryan from a respected officer into one of the Hell Hosts’ most recognizable commanders.

Command Philosophy

Bastion does not believe a General’s purpose is personal combat glory.

His philosophy is summarized by one of his most repeated statements:

“A general doesn’t chase glory. A general builds the path others stand on. Victory is the result. Survival is the duty.”

Ryan views command as responsibility rather than privilege.

A commander’s job is to create the circumstances in which soldiers can succeed.

That means understanding:

  • Logistics
  • Terrain
  • Morale
  • Medical support
  • Reinforcement timing
  • Ammunition
  • Evacuation
  • Communications
  • Enemy intent

Bastion believes brilliant tactics become meaningless if the force implementing them cannot survive long enough to matter.

Defensive Warfare

Bastion is particularly famous for defensive operations.

His nickname does not come from passivity.

Ryan’s defensive doctrine is highly active.

He uses:

  • Layered defensive lines
  • Counterattacks
  • Mobile reserves
  • Controlled withdrawals
  • Kill zones
  • Artillery coordination
  • Rapid reinforcement
  • Battlefield engineering

Bastion does not simply hold ground.

He creates positions that become progressively more expensive for the enemy to attack.

When opponents finally overextend, he strikes back.

Combined-Arms Warfare

Ryan is an expert in coordinating multiple branches of military force simultaneously.

His campaigns frequently combine:

  • Infantry
  • Armour
  • Artillery
  • Aircraft
  • Orbital support
  • Logistics units
  • Engineering formations
  • Reconnaissance assets

Bastion does not believe any single branch wins a war alone.

He expects commanders beneath him to understand how their forces fit into the wider operation.

Morale

Bastion treats morale as a strategic resource.

He rejects the idea that soldiers can simply be ordered to remain effective indefinitely.

Fatigue matters.

Fear matters.

Loss matters.

Command matters.

Ryan is known to personally visit damaged formations when circumstances allow.

He speaks with ordinary personnel and frequently remembers individuals he has met years earlier.

This contributes heavily to his reputation among troops.

Bastion does not promise everyone will survive.

He promises their lives will not be spent carelessly.

Combat Ability

Despite his senior rank, Bastion remains a highly capable combatant.

He spent a significant portion of his early career in direct fighting and has retained those skills.

Ryan no longer enters combat unnecessarily.

A General carrying a rifle into every firefight is generally a General neglecting his actual responsibilities.

However, when command positions are directly threatened, Bastion is more than capable of defending himself.

Loadout

94CAR Command Variant

Bastion carries a customized command variant of the 94CAR.

The weapon features:

  • Extended effective range
  • Enhanced optics
  • Command-network integration
  • Directive-link systems
  • Reinforced battlefield components

Its command systems allow Ryan to maintain access to tactical information while remaining mobile.

Officer’s Sidearm

Ryan carries a high-grade semi-automatic service pistol.

The weapon is reliable, accurate, and intentionally uncomplicated.

Bastion has used several more advanced sidearms during his career.

He repeatedly returned to this one.

Combat Blade

Bastion carries a custom-forged combat blade.

Unlike many ceremonial officer weapons, the blade is functional.

Ryan considers ceremonial weapons that cannot survive combat somewhat pointless.

Decorations

Bastion possesses an extensive collection of military decorations.

Known awards include:

  • Veylor Cross
  • Ashfire Medal
  • Iron Ward Medal
  • Riftline Service Star
  • Bastion Citation
  • Legion Honor

The exact criteria and histories behind several of these awards remain to be documented.

Ryan rarely discusses his decorations unless asked about the personnel who earned them alongside him.

Relationship with His Soldiers

Bastion’s strongest loyalty is directed toward the people under his command.

He has little tolerance for officers who sacrifice personnel for:

  • Political appearances
  • Personal advancement
  • Reputation
  • Poor planning
  • Avoidable objectives

Ryan accepts that military operations cost lives.

He refuses to confuse unavoidable casualties with acceptable incompetence.

One of the quickest ways for an officer to lose Bastion’s respect is to discuss casualties as numbers without understanding who those numbers represent.

Relationship with Hell Host Leadership

Bastion is highly respected within Hell Host command.

His extensive operational experience gives him considerable influence during large-scale strategic planning.

He is willing to disagree with senior leadership when he believes a plan unnecessarily endangers personnel or risks strategic collapse.

This includes figures above him in the broader hierarchy.

Ryan does not enjoy disagreement for its own sake.

Once a decision is made, he expects officers to execute it.

But before that decision is made, he considers silence irresponsible.

Relationship with Predator

Bastion recognizes Predator as the founder and senior leader of the Hell Hosts.

Their leadership styles differ considerably.

Predator has historically operated closer to direct action and personal battlefield leadership.

Bastion increasingly views his own role from the scale of armies, supply networks, and entire theatres.

Despite these differences, both place enormous importance on the soldiers beneath them.

Ryan is willing to challenge Predator strategically if necessary.

He would not do so casually.

Predator appears to value officers willing to provide genuine military advice rather than simply agree with him.

Reputation

Bastion’s arrival in a combat theatre has significant psychological impact.

To Hell Host personnel, it usually means senior command believes the situation can still be recovered.

To enemies familiar with his record, it means an unstable front is about to become considerably harder to break.

A common saying among personnel who have served under him is:

“If Bastion has arrived, somebody expects us to survive.”

His absence from a major defensive crisis can create the opposite reaction.

If Ryan Rhenford is needed somewhere else, personnel often wonder what could possibly be worse.

Strengths

Strategic Intelligence

Ryan is one of the Hell Hosts’ strongest large-scale battlefield commanders.

Defensive Warfare

He excels at stabilizing collapsing military positions.

Logistics

Bastion understands that armies require functioning supply systems.

Morale Leadership

Personnel tend to trust Ryan because he understands the cost of his orders.

Experience

More than two decades of service have exposed him to numerous forms of warfare.

Weaknesses

Personal Responsibility

Ryan internalizes military losses heavily.

He remembers failures for years.

Self-Sacrifice

His willingness to protect his personnel can occasionally push him toward unnecessary personal risk.

Political Disinterest

Ryan dislikes internal political maneuvering and can underestimate its effect on military decision-making.

Control

Bastion prefers tightly organized operations.

Highly anomalous or fundamentally unpredictable conflicts can undermine his preferred command style.
