Aaron Vance
Full Name: Aaron Vance
Known As: Senior Officer Vance
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 38
Faction: Protection and Crime Enforcement
Rank: Senior Officer
Assignment: Tactical Response Division
Position: Tactical Officer
Specialisation: Ballistic Shield Operations, Breaching, Close-Quarters Protection
Status: Active
Aaron Vance is a Senior Officer within the Protection and Crime Enforcement Tactical Response Division and an experienced member of Sergeant Jonah Briggs’ tactical team.
Specialising in ballistic shield operations and forced entry, Vance is frequently placed near the front of tactical formations during operations involving armed suspects, exposed approaches, civilian extraction, and confined environments.
His job regularly involves becoming the safest available piece of cover in a very unsafe room.
Vance approaches this responsibility with considerable patience.
Appearance
Vance is a heavily built human male standing approximately 6’3”.
He has dark brown skin, brown eyes, and closely cropped black hair.
Years of carrying heavy tactical equipment have given him considerable upper-body strength, although none of his physical capabilities are considered superhuman.
During operations, Vance wears reinforced PCE Tactical Response armour capable of supporting the additional weight associated with his specialist equipment.
He is most recognisable by the large ballistic shield frequently carried during high-risk deployments.
Outside tactical operations, his size tends to make him considerably more intimidating than his actual personality.
Vance finds this mildly amusing.
Personality
Vance is patient, quiet, dependable, and exceptionally difficult to provoke.
Where some tactical officers cope with stress through constant movement or conversation, Vance becomes calmer the longer an operation continues.
He can remain behind cover for hours waiting for circumstances to change without becoming noticeably restless.
This patience has become one of his greatest strengths.
Vance does not chase opportunities simply because they appear.
He waits until they become useful.
Outside operations, he is soft-spoken and possesses a subtle, extremely dry sense of humour.
People meeting him for the first time sometimes interpret his silence as seriousness.
Personnel who have worked alongside him know better.
Career
Vance began his PCE career as a conventional Officer.
His physical strength and calm behaviour during violent incidents eventually encouraged him to apply for Tactical Response.
Following specialist training, Vance became a Tactical Officer and gradually developed particular expertise in shield operations and breaching.
Years of operational experience eventually earned him promotion to Senior Officer.
Vance has since participated in armed arrests, hostage rescues, fortified-entry operations, riot responses, organised-crime raids, and numerous incidents involving suspects equipped with weapons substantially more powerful than anything normally encountered by patrol personnel.
Despite his experience, Vance has shown little immediate interest in pursuing command.
He enjoys being an operator.
Ballistic Shield Specialist
Vance is extensively trained in the use of heavy protective shields during tactical operations.
His shield allows Tactical Response personnel to approach dangerous positions while maintaining additional protection against gunfire, fragmentation, and other threats.
Vance may be used to:
- Lead movement through exposed areas
- Protect officers during evacuations
- Provide mobile cover
- Approach armed suspects
- Protect breaching personnel
- Cover casualty recovery
- Assist operations in confined corridors
- Establish temporary protected positions
Shield operations require considerably more than simply carrying armour in front of the body.
Visibility is reduced.
Mobility is restricted.
Weapon handling becomes more difficult.
The officer carrying the shield may also become the most obvious target in the room.
Vance is very aware of this.
PCE Tactical Shield
Vance’s primary specialist equipment is a reinforced PCE ballistic shield designed for high-risk law-enforcement operations.
The shield combines advanced composite materials with limited energy-assisted reinforcement, allowing it to withstand considerably more punishment than conventional ballistic protection.
It is not indestructible.
Sustained military-grade weapons, heavy energy fire, anti-materiel weapons, explosives, and sufficiently powerful anomalous attacks can overwhelm it.
Vance treats the shield as protection rather than invulnerability.
Integrated systems can interface with his helmet and tactical network, allowing him to maintain awareness despite the shield obscuring part of his normal field of vision.
The shield can also accommodate high-intensity illumination and other mission-specific equipment.
Vance refuses unnecessary attachments.
According to him, every additional system eventually becomes something else that can break.
Breaching
Vance also serves as one of Briggs’ primary breaching specialists.
He is trained to defeat mechanical locks, reinforced doors, security barriers, and other obstacles using methods ranging from specialised tools to controlled explosive charges.
Like Briggs, Vance prefers the least destructive method that will reliably work.
If a door can be opened mechanically, he opens it mechanically.
If it requires a breaching charge, he uses a breaching charge.
If circumstances permit somebody with the correct access code to simply unlock it, Vance considers that an excellent outcome.
He has no emotional attachment to destroying doors.
Equipment
Vance’s standard tactical equipment commonly includes:
- Reinforced PCE Tactical Response armour
- Enclosed tactical helmet
- Integrated communications
- Thermal and low-light optics
- Respiratory protection
- Heavy PCE ballistic shield
- Compact one-handed firearm
- P2-series sidearm
- Breaching equipment
- Less-lethal equipment
- Restraints
- Medical supplies
His exact loadout changes depending upon the operation.
When a shield is unnecessary, Vance operates with a conventional Tactical Response carbine and can perform the same general duties as other members of the team.
His specialisation does not prevent him from functioning without it.
Combat
Vance has no anomalous abilities, biological enhancements, or superhuman powers.
He is physically strong, extensively trained, and highly experienced in close-quarters tactical operations.
His fighting style is heavily influenced by his specialist role.
Vance prioritises positioning, protection, and controlling space rather than aggressively pursuing opponents.
When carrying his shield, he can create opportunities for officers behind him to move, engage threats, extract civilians, or reach better positions.
His greatest contribution to a firefight may therefore be preventing somebody else from being shot.
Vance considers this entirely satisfactory.
Patience
Vance is particularly well suited to prolonged siege situations.
He does not become easily frustrated by waiting.
During one operation, Vance reportedly remained in position behind his shield for several hours while negotiators attempted to resolve an armed standoff.
When another officer eventually asked how he could stand doing nothing for that long, Vance replied:
“I’m being paid either way.”
The suspect surrendered peacefully.
Vance considers the operation a success.
Relationship with Jonah Briggs
Vance has worked alongside Sergeant Jonah Briggs for years and is one of the officers Briggs trusts most during high-risk entries.
Their personalities complement one another.
Briggs is direct and constantly evaluating the immediate tactical problem.
Vance is patient enough to wait for the correct moment to solve it.
Their communication during operations is often extremely brief.
Briggs has worked with Vance long enough that detailed explanations are rarely necessary.
A typical exchange may consist entirely of:
“Vance. Door.”
“Locked.”
“I’m aware.”
“Just keeping you informed.”
The door generally ceases being relevant shortly afterward.
Relationship with Elena Ward
Chief Inspector Elena Ward considers Vance one of the Tactical Response Division’s most dependable frontline operators.
His patience aligns particularly well with Ward’s preference for controlled resolutions.
Vance has no problem waiting while negotiations continue.
He does not interpret delay as weakness.
If Ward determines that an assault is necessary, however, Vance transitions from waiting to action immediately.
Ward trusts him particularly during civilian extraction and casualty recovery, where his protective equipment can be used for something considerably more important than advancing toward a suspect.
Working with Younger Officers
Vance frequently assists less experienced Tactical Officers during training and active operations.
He is not formally responsible for commanding them unless circumstances require it, but his experience makes him an unofficial source of advice within the team.
His teaching style is understated.
He rarely gives long speeches.
Instead, he points out small mistakes.
A foot positioned incorrectly.
Too much exposure around a corner.
A weapon pointed somewhere it should not be.
An officer moving faster than the person providing their cover.
Vance believes most serious tactical mistakes begin as small ones.
Correcting them early is easier.
Fear
Vance does experience fear during tactical operations.
He considers claims to the contrary ridiculous.
He has been shot at.
He has felt rounds strike the shield inches from his face.
He has entered rooms without knowing what was waiting behind them.
He has watched protective equipment fail.
Vance simply does not believe fear requires immediate action.
Sometimes fear means move.
Sometimes fear means stop.
Knowing the difference is part of the job.
Reputation
Within Tactical Response, Aaron Vance is known less for spectacular operations than for consistency.
He does not seek attention.
He does not collect stories about himself.
He does not consider being shot at an accomplishment.
When an operation requires somebody to stand at the front carrying several kilograms of armour while an armed suspect attempts to kill everyone behind it, Vance does his job.
When the operation ends, he puts the shield away.
Then he waits for the next door.
