Overview
Vespera is a heavily forested world located within the mysterious Aegimius System.
Considered one of the system’s most visually spectacular planets, Vespera is covered by enormous forests whose upper canopies produce vast displays of natural bioluminescence.
From above the forests, particularly at night, these lights stretch across the horizon like stars scattered across the planet’s surface.
Beneath this beauty, however, lies one of the most hostile natural ecosystems within Aegimius.
The enormous forests prevent much of Vespera’s natural light from reaching the surface, while dense and near-permanent fog blankets much of the forest floor.
Visibility beneath the canopy can become dangerously limited.
Vespera’s wildlife has evolved accordingly.
The Crown
The Crown is the collective name given to Vespera’s upper forest ecosystem.
Hundreds of metres above the forest floor, enormous branches form interconnected canopies stretching across vast portions of the planet.
The Crown is famous for its bioluminescence.
Plants, fungi and numerous animal species produce natural light for purposes including communication, navigation and reproduction.
At night, entire forests become illuminated.
This phenomenon has made Vespera famous throughout the Aegimius System for its extraordinary natural beauty.
The Crown possesses an ecosystem largely distinct from the world beneath it, with numerous species spending their entire lives without ever reaching the forest floor.
The Gloom
«[!danger] THE GLOOM
Beneath Vespera’s illuminated canopy lies an almost completely different world.»
The Gloom is the common name for the dark lower forests and forest floor of Vespera.
Very little sunlight penetrates the enormous canopy.
Even during daylight hours, some regions remain trapped in near-permanent twilight.
Dense fog is extremely common and can reduce visibility to only several metres.
In the deepest forests, artificial lighting provides limited assistance as powerful beams frequently reflect from suspended moisture.
The Gloom contains many of Vespera’s largest and most dangerous predators.
Many native species rely more heavily upon sound, vibration, scent and other sensory adaptations than conventional eyesight.
Ecology
Vespera possesses an exceptionally diverse ecosystem divided broadly between organisms adapted to The Crown and those adapted to The Gloom.
Some species are capable of moving between both environments.
These organisms are of particular interest to researchers due to the dramatically different conditions found between the two ecological layers.
Vesperan wildlife ranges from harmless canopy-dwelling animals to enormous terrestrial predators.
Much of the planet’s biodiversity remains undocumented.
Exploration
Despite numerous expeditions, large portions of Vespera remain poorly charted.
Exploration beneath the canopy is particularly difficult due to:
- Extremely limited visibility
- Dense vegetation
- Difficult terrain
- Communication interference
- Dangerous wildlife
- Enormous cave and root systems
Aerial and orbital surveys provide extensive information about the Crown but reveal comparatively little about what exists beneath it.
As a result, new species continue to be discovered during surface expeditions.
The Aegimius Mystery
Like much of the Aegimius System, Vespera remains poorly understood.
The system is renowned for containing extraordinary natural resources, unusual phenomena and evidence of ancient power.
Whether Vespera’s unusual ecosystem is entirely natural remains unknown.
For most documented species, conventional evolutionary explanations remain sufficient.
However, exploration of the planet is still incomplete.
What exists within its deepest forests has yet to be fully determined.
Trivia
- Vespera’s forests cover enormous portions of the planetary surface.
- The illuminated canopy is visible from high altitude and orbit.
- The upper ecosystem is commonly called The Crown.
- The fog-covered lower ecosystem is called The Gloom.
- Some organisms never leave the Crown during their entire lifespan.
- Other species spend their entire lives without direct exposure to sunlight.
- Visibility within the Gloom can fall to only several metres.
- Much of Vespera’s wildlife remains undocumented.
- Despite its dangerous surface, Vespera is regarded as one of the most beautiful worlds in the Aegimius System.
